Landfills are not a popular thing. But in Marshall County we have one and need to deal with it.

Cedar Ridge has applied for an expansion and several folks are against it, even going as far as saying that those who are opposed should be alowed to dump their trash in the yards of those who are in favor of the expansion.(look at the Lewisburg posts)

I am not necessarily in favor of landfills, but I see them as being a "necessary evil" as someone else had stated.

Currently as far as I can tell there is no plan in place that would deal with the waste generated by Marshall County, other than to ship it some where else and let it be someone-elses problem.

The problem with this is that it will mean that the free drop off at the convience centers will go away, Marshall County Govt. will lose a source of income (remember this recent tax increase was only to cover debt). What will it do to taxes in the future?

I encourage you to support the expansion of the landfill until a better solution can be found, and not let a few individuals who don't have a solution to the waste problem make the decision for the entire county.

I for one don't have the answers, but some of the alternatives like un-monitored illegal dumping into the sink holes and dithces in our county scares me a hell of a lot more that a landfill which is regulated by State and Federal agencies.

If you think that no one does that then take a drive down the back roads of our county, take a walk thru most any land (acreage) that is up for sale, you will see remmanants of illegal dumping.

Who knows what has been dumped over the years, its not the solids we need to worry about, but all of the liquids.. oils, chemicals, pesticides ...etc....

Should resident be required to start paying for waste disposal, will some revert back to the "good ole days" and start dumping where-ever?

Put one in Chapel Hill then. If was just our trash going in that landfill it would not have needed to expand. Let the places that have been sending trash here open one so we can send some back.
