Supporters still behind Chamois ferry project

Before finishing the session earlier this month, the Missouri House of Representatives voiced its support for establishing a ferry boat service at Chamois.

Not only would the ferryboat support Chamois and surrounding local communities, but it would also have major impacts on the Capitol City in providing a safer route for traffic; an alternate route should there be a major tie-up on the bridge; and it is a step in the right direction of providing alternate means of transportation for future.

What about safety factors for Chamois residents?

1. Our roadways are barely tolerable; increased traffic will cause further damage. How will repairs be financed?

2. Average speed on Highway 100 is >10 mph over the speed limit. Will a traffic management plan be implemented?

3. Increased exposure to criminal elements will put Chamois citizens at risk; has the redevelopment group arranged for a full time police force?

4. How will noise and lights associated with ferry operation affect nearby campers? How about nearby residents and property values?

5. How will the ferry's pollution affect the river and nearby residents?

6. Will Chamois park become a trucker's parking lot? Will those heavy haulers be driving through the park, where our children are playing? If not, homes will have to be demolished to provide access. Will Eminent Domain be used to condemn our property?

The ferry project should be shelved if proponents are unable or unwilling to provide satisfactory solutions for these problems.
