'Ritmo Latino' launches today
For local DJ Sergio Polanco, "Ritmo Latino" is more than just a two-hour radio show.

Let us hope "The Latin Rhythem" is also short-lived.

Finally what we were waiting for it's here. Your American Dream came true. Don't let anyone tell you different. They could not get there where you are and they have no idea how big the sacrifice was. Don't ever stop dreaming and always be there for the community.
Estamos contigo y te apoyamos siempre DJ Sergio! |

Judged:
1 A person who legitimately wants to become an American would reject this program and be well on his/her way to learning American culture rather than trying to strong-arm Americans into accepting theirs. Remember, this is a melting pot. But some people seem to be refusing to "melt". Latinos are not the only ones immigrating here. Americans do not have enough time in a day to learn Spanish, Chinese, French, Russian, German, Japanese, etc, etc. But a perspective immigrant DOES have the ability to learn ONE new language. It is only right that it be the one of the country the are moving to. I can't even immagine moving to another country and assuming that they should make accomodations for MY language and culture. That would be disrespectful and blateantly arrogant of me. That country would have every right to be offended by my actions. By their actions, WEEO is selling-out America. |

Give the radio station a break. They're hoping to capture a share of the audience in this area and to sell advertising to some of the Hispanic businesses. It is good American capitalism isn't it? Would you have the same view if WEEQ had a Czech music/language program? How about a German language program? There are, you know, in other parts of the USA. It is only a two-hour show. Please don't knock the radio station for trying.
If it's not for you, don't listen. |
|
Talking about the claim you are making that the show had 12 thousand listeners. Provide some facts to support what you are claiming. Did WEEQ tell you that? Did you just pull the figure out of the air? What does my name have to do with asking you to give the source of the 12,000? |
|
Yes, I would be equally offended by ANY other foreign language radio station for the exact same reasons. The same principle applies to anyone immigrating here from any country. It's funny that you bring that up though. During the mass influx of immigrants from Europe in the early parts of the 20th century, many families did not allow any other language but English to spoken in their home when they arrived here. They actually wanted to become Americans and respected their new countrymen enough to learn their language...unlike some in this area. Why bother learning English if everyone is going to be forced to cater to you in you original language? I don't "knock the station for trying", I knock them for knowingly selling us out. My argument is intact. |

Too bad you didn't grow up in the Cleveland, Ohio area. Great polka music, and who cared what the DJ were saying, just keep the polkas playing. So now we'll enjoy a little salsa that's good too.

What's next on the chopping block?
Celtic Music? Italian operas? |

Try reading the article before commenting - you will see the source of the 12000 number...you have misinterpreted his comment. |

Better start compiling a list of businesses who have purchased commercial air time. By your logic - they are the REAL sellouts. However - you'll find as long as the money is green - we are all speaking the same language... |
|
The article claims 12K Hispanics in the region. That statistic may, or may not, be accurate. It came from the DJ who is selling WEEQ on the idea of giving him air time. Does the broadcast signal of WEEQ cover an area that covers the region that supposedly includes 12,000 Hispanics?
Does it smack of hype? Yep! With luck the program may get a sponsor and some businesses will buy ads. Wal-Mart would not need to buy ads on the show. |

gees, Martin, I'm not Hispanics, I listen to all kinds of music. I remember as a kid listening to a really good singer named Eddie Arnold, but that don't make me a country western fan.
