I was born and raised in NW PA. Up there, pot pie was chicken, vegs, baked in a pie crust. The first time I was at the Shippensburg Fair, I ordered pot pie at the Tall Cedars food booth. Was I ever surprised to see what it really was! I do like this area's version of pot pie but I am a lazy cook and I feel like it would really be a lot of work. Is it?

Typical hick meal.

I've got a better idea. Get yourself some beer, refried beans, rice, sour cream, lettuce, tomato, hot sauce, and flour tortillas.

Brown your beef in a skillet. Toss it in a flour tortilla with the rest of the aforementioned ingredients and sit back and watch your family pound these manly burritos.
Just wondering

I roll out the dough between sheets of waxed paper, lightly floured. Easier clean up.

Pot Pie VS Dumplings

I always thought dumplings were made with a "biscuit" type dough and were rounder. Like little dough balls...

Where as pot pie uses a pie type of dough.

Also in my house growing up we had 2 kinds of pot pie. Baked pot pie which was with the top crust baked over veggies, potatoes, meat and gravy. Then we had Slippery pot pie which is the kind the article is about.

I always loved the slippery version better. Thanks for the recipes. I can hardly wait to make this for my family!

Wow, this is one of three foods I really miss since losing my job at Letterkenny. The Buttonwood used to serve it about once a month. The one thing they don't have here where they serve "chicken and dumblings" is fresh chopped onions to throw on the top. Ummm!
I just had to respond to this quote but I will also be making another. It's hard to recall what year it was, but my mother was a cook at Buttonwood. My family moved here from Shippensburg (Huckleberry land) in 1970. As I am sure anyone around here would say of their mother, my Mom made the best slippery pot pie. I am fairly sure she worked there at least in 71, 72 and 1973 and probably much longer. She loved working there and it was hard work feeding all who filled the place daily. Every now and then she brought home some leftovers but there was never any leftover slippery pot pie. We mostly got stewed tomatos, beets and hotdogs with cheese in the center and bacon wrapped around it. The hotdogs went fast, the others were a no go for me; (hey I was young). My mom made it the old fashioned way as was described in the article and its been many many years since I have had it, now I am wanting to go to those dinners. Thank you so much for your post about Buttonwood, such great memories and to the author of the article itself, just wonderful.

Ok, heres my second post. An earlier post by Proud Pa Mama was correct, in my experience. I also think the recipe is in the old Menonite cookbook. Sorry I don't know the author and name, but they aren't real easy to find, but if you do, it's worth every penny. Over the years I have seen people make slippery pot pie and place a layer of dumplings on top, allowing the heat of the dish to cook them. It was really good but extra on the name Carb OD called it.
I have a question for anyone who cares to answer. I am sure it was always served in our home with a veggie in like lima beans, but I am not sure which veggie to put with the beef, the ham and the chicken.
I gotta tell ya, I found two ways of cheating to get a dish something like what mama made. One time I used the premade pie crusts you can buy in the refrigerator isle, and cut it into squares (I can't make dough good enough myself).
The other thing I do is take some chicken in a crock pot all day, clean it off the bone, add potatoes and a veg and onion and towards the end, I put in Pennsylvania dutch noodles in the bag. If you over cook it, the noodles and starch in the potato thicken it and noodles come to a consistency almost like a slippery pot pie. Ok, poor working womans version, now I am ashamed.
This was such a refreshing article, reminding of the great family traditions from this area, helping mom make the dough, all the family sitting down together and really good food for the soul as another poster wrote. I was just telling my husband who is from Mass. that from my experience you do not find much Lebanon bologna anywhere but here and now I am not sure if thats still true, over the years visitors would always ask for the sweet leb bologna and gibbles potato chips. Also does anyone know anything about grape jelly meatballs? weird right? but someone made them once and I haven't been able to figure out how they did it. Thanks again....how to get the smile off my face? Lol

1 pack swedish meatballs
12 oz bottle grape jelly
12 oz bottle chili sauce

Put chili sauce and jelly in a large pot, heat until jelly is melted and sauce is smooth, stirring often. Add frozen meatballs- heat until meatballs are thawed and then simmer for 3 hours.

You can add different stuff to the ham loaf (or hamburger) like peppers, seasonings, etc..just a different way to make something and having it taste wonderful.
Pot pie is basically a poor man's dough soup with meat and sometimes potatoes in it (and sometimes there's another veggie or two in it).
For the poster that was mortified to eat it, that's a local dish...and it's certainly not English or Scottish. They make their own foods in a screwed up way.
Lived in Scotland, so, I can attest to that. Haggis anyone? How about Blood pudding? Actually both of those aren't too bad. I was even okay with eating alot of curried lamb and rice. What got me was their version of Pizza.

I dunno, I was raised in Shippensburg but my Mom (who was raised everywhere...so it seemed) cheated and used bow-tie pasta for her "pot pie" I didn't have the real deal till I was 20 and someone made it for me.
