Blessed by gifted teachers

Full story: Berkshire Eagle

Along with everybody else, I have been trying for the past several years to figure out what is wrong with our educational system.

Annually check the grades of the students in each subject, retain the teachers whos students score highest, fire the teachers whos students score lowest!
If teachers want to remain teaching they will work harder to inspire and educate their charges!

Using your logic, sooner or later every special ed teacher will be fired and no teacher of accelerated or gifted programs will ever be fired. Teaching to the test is every bit as stupid as promoting due to seniority. The only way to evaluate teachers properly is to allow parents make a subjective decision on where to send their kids, and administrators to make a subjective decision on what teachers to employ to attract those students. Will parents make mistakes? Of course. Will administrators make mistakes? Of course. Will they make as many mistakes as the seniority system or teaching to the test? Not even close.

Adam Smith and Ramdan,

Check out the original FreaKonomics,(or Freaconomics?) book. Teachers are not above helping their students cheat to acheive higher test score to keep their jobs.

I am not talking about teaching to the test! I am talking about total sum knowledge of a given subject! SPED of course is a whole different thing!
Get rid of tenure, get rid of teachers that are unable to convey knowledge because they are unable to hold the attention of the students!

Parents and the education system are to blame.
Instead of being taught traditional subjects, kids are told too many things they should be taught at home or should have time to formulate an opinion of on their own. Important subject matter which would help them understand their culture, history and form of government is purposefully not taught any longer. Kids are instead directed toward a way of perceiving their culture, country and the world. This is the "progressive" methodology for transforming our nation into a socialized state.
Most parents stand idly by unaware and watch it happen. So long as their kids parrot all the latest phrases and fashion from silly sit-coms, everything's OK.
No wonder kids have become cynical about public education and about their educators. They feel something is wrong. And it is.
The consequences of this willful perversion of our system of "education" are beginning to be felt.

And how are you going to determine the 'total sum knowledge' if not with a test? Take the teacher's word for it?

Or have DSS investigate each and every household where kids perform poorly. That might "inspire" parents to parent.

It looks like the woman in Rhode Island did the next best thing and showed them the proverbial finger. Good for her, its about time somebody stood up and acted, everybody knows that the education system is unacceptable. Parents have a roll too and its about time that they stand accountable for their kids. Maybe parents need to start doing home work as well.

So why did you let the murderer of Wendy Lincoln go? Supposed to have only three months to live, but it's been six and he still isn't in hell.
