The commercial wind turbine business has a dirty little secret : "gear box failures" These failures in multi-million dollar turbines only three years old are causing catastrophic failures costing the owners up to one million every three years to keep the turbines online.

One gear box company has had over 600 gear box failures. The megawatt turbines in Portsmouth,Rhode Island ,Princeton,Massachusetts and Otis Air Base on Cape Cod all have three year old catastrophic failures. Many feel the gear box failures have led to the catastrophic fires in the motors.

Now the wind industry after keeping the secret that the new turbines have direct drive units and don't breakdown ! Can you believe the ongoing bunco scheme ? These turbines only last three years !

Nice win Liz ! Councilor Elizabeth Pedro was re-elected because she took a stand against the Democrats from the 2006-2007 town council that voted for the broken down turbine.

The town needs to know that the Portsmouth Economic Development Committee was not at fault for the bad decision to buy the turbine.

The Town Council back in 2006-2007 put out a RFP (request for proposal). The RFP would only support a large wind turbine of the 1.5 megawatt class for less than three million dollars. At that time turbine companies were selling 1.5 MW turbines for over 4 million dollars .The town got what they paid for a cheap 3 million dollar turbine.

The Town Council (2006-2007)should have selected a turbine half that size 660 kilowatts like the Portsmouth Abbey. They could have purchased a brand name turbine with a good track record rather than going with the bankrupt AAER company.

Had the town council read the PEDC information supplied to them they would never tried to purchase a large class 1.5 MW turbine for less than 3 million -you get what you pay for !

We need Councilor Elizabeth Pedro to keep doing her homework ! keep an eye on the next step in the wind turbine story ..........
