Good job, Rhode Island!! If you can't get the teachers to do their job, how can you expect any thing more from the students!!

I think we need to look at home. Teachers can only teach those who want to learn, and these days parents don't seem to care if there child gets an education like we did with our kids. We were made to go to school and came home to parents that took an interest in our work at school and homework. If parents gave thier children pride to want to be the best they can be then they would do well in school. Teachers are there to teach not babysit or disapline. Now days kids drop out and no law is put into place. What happen to parents being held responsable for education of their own? Don't blame the teachers! Blame the system and parents!

Good teachers work many hours after school is out. They can't make the students learn if they don't want to. You can lead a horse to the water, but you can't make it drink.

Have you ever tried to get a child to do something that they absolutely do not want to do? This is how it is to teach, sometimes. It is not that the teachers are not competent, it is the students are not held accountable for their actions. I am a great teacher, and there are days that certain students WILL NOT do any work. You can not make a student learn who is more worried about theier ipods, or cell phones. Those of you who are agree with the Central Falls School Board, come and try to teach for a day. You will see what I am talking about.

When are the elementary and middle school teachers going to be fired? High school students should be able to read when they enter the building. And what about the parents? Does anyone hold the students at all accountable for their education?

"should be" are the operative words in your statement - but in reality how many kids cannot read, write, or do enough math to even make a simple living - way too many! accountability - we are the USA no one takes responsibility anymore!

I agree. I don't completely blame the teachers, nor do I blame the parents. I am a parent of a pleasant child that just refuses to do well in school. I've worked with his teachers to provide as much help as I can at home, and it still doesn't work. However, I do blame the teachers at my childs' school because I KNOW he didn't learn what he needed to learn this past grade, and I requested that my son be held back a grade, but was told no. Make the Teachers accountable for not teaching properly when it needs to be, but make the STUDENTS accountable for their actions as well.

I sure wish some teacher had made it possible for me to get financial aid for college. My dad had a heart condition, and died when I was 17. And although my mom worked, she sure could have used more income than I was able to provide her at that age. But, since all of my family are Americans from birth, we didn't qualify. You want "goodies" you have to sneak into the US.
