What do you think about Ky.Chamber of Commerce Pres.David Adkinson's proposal that would require state employees and teachers pay an additional $50.00 per month toward their health insurance premiums?

Not too bad of an idea if they give them a raise to pay for it!

I don't think it is a bad idea they continuously get raises. And besides that hasn't everyones insurance premiums been raised.Plus their jobs are more secure than anyone they can afford it.

I realize that everyone has to pay more. But most teachers jobs are not as secure as the general public thinks. Just like anywhere .if they want someone in your place, they will find a loophole and make it happen!!!! Teachers dont make a lot anyway, they constantly have to buy things for the classroom out of their own money. Also have to get masters degree to keep their jobs. In the younger grades, problem parents are the pain and as they get older it becomes the students. With the working conditions in the schools today, most general public wouldnt last a week in the public school system and would probably be in jail for saying what needs to be said to parents and students!!!They have more mental work than most professions would require. Teachers should not have to pay more for insurance however I dont know about other school/state employees.

Yes well look around muhl.co. What job here is secure besides a state worker. That would be an incentive for me.Teachers don't make much from the start, but they do later. How many of you can make around 40 to 50,000 and have holidays and summer off.How many of you are in a union and know you are secure with retirement? How many of you don't have to pay for insurance? Now let's start with congress because this is the best incentive plan ever.

I'm not as concerned about the teachers as I am the state legislatures increasing their retirement plan from a 759,158 budget to a 4.28 million budget with Kentucky over a billion dollars in debt. This was done very quietly 4 years ago. They are the ones we need to keep our eye on!
It is true, teachers do not make much at the start, and they are required to have a four year degree (well over 50,000) in addition to a master's degree alone that will now cost them over 30,000. Elementary teachers work 9 - 10 hour days, are required to attend nightime activities, professional development, and work in their classrooms during the summer, so your child won't walk in a bare classroom and a teacher winging the lessons in August. So, it all evens out. I'm not taking one position or another. I just want to dispell a falacy that teachers get the summers and holiday vacations off. Those nice little bulletin boards and welcoming classrooms are not done by a classroom fairy who visits over the summer.(and I am not a teacher)

Teachers have a good retirement because they pay into a teacher retirement account, like Social Security. However, it isn't as good as it once was....the same thing is happening to it as the S.S. A few years back Gov. Patton borrowed from the teacher account since it was doing so well(funny how private run retirement is better than government). Anyway, now it isn't as sound since they have never paid the money back. Teachers once got 3.0% of their pay for each year of service. It is now down to 1.5% Also, they've added more days that one much teach without an increase in the pay. I agree, they do get holidays off, but most people do, but maybe not summer which is down to june and july. They do have to get a 6 year degree if you figure in the master degree that they must complete. However, their pay is not close to any other job that requires a 6 year degree. Do you really want to spend all day with kids that have no respect? Who don't have parents that care? Who say "F*** You to your face and do not think one thing about it and there's nothing you can do about it?Now Congress is totally different or even here at the state level. Hey, where else can you spend the session (your job) and not come up with a budget, get called back and get over time pay to do a job you didn't do the first time? Then you decide your own pay and retirement? Now that's a job for me!

I am a state worker and I do have to pay in part for my insurance. State workers are, by law, supposed to get a 5% raise each year. But, the smart ones in Frankfort lower it each year to 1%, then they up the cost we pay for our insurance to just above 1%, so we never see the raise. Yes, we do have job security and a decent retirement, but they try to balance the state's budget from our pay and benefits. State workers do not make as much doing their jobs as people doing the same jobs in the private sector, but we did have great benefits. Now, our benefits are cut during budget time. I can't speak for teachers, but we don't have a formal union. They can only talk to the lawmakers, we have no leverage with the lawmakers, they do as they like. I have yet to see a stateworker get rich. Anymore, job security is all we have and lawmakers continue to talk layoffs and days off without pay. Working for the state might look like a bed of roses, but, trust me, we all live paycheck to paycheck.

It's where not were dumb ass. And take it from a state employee. Our insurance is way more than most working Americans. Also we do get an annual raise this is true. It is currently 1% that does not even cover the cost of living increase. So all of you "educated" people need to educate yourself a bit before you go cracking on the state employee's and teachers.

I think they should pay the extra $50.00 per month.I pay over $500.00 a month for my insurance. That's better than having 3500 employees laid off and out of work.

Well if social security/medicare isn't seeing an increase in the cost of living why should you.If your "cracking" about other people's opinion maybe you should try English/Grammar and get educated yourself. All I am saying is we are living in times were it is tough for everyone. Most people including state employee's with dependants are having to pay for insurance,so why does this make you so angry. Just like the last post who pays 500.00 just to have insurance, and you people are mad over 50.00. What makes you so much more important?

I don't think that it makes us any more important than the person that works in the private sector. But, we do jobs that receive better pay in the private sector. I work at the prison and I assure you that these jobs can not be done by just anyone. We take abuse everyday from inmates, we are searched and our every move is observed to ensure that we are doing our job. We work with very limited supplies and I personally have purchased office supplies out of my own pocket just so I could do my job. In these tough times everyone is hurting, it's no cake walk to be a state worker. We did have a very good pension program, but the lawmakers changed it a couple of years ago. When the state wants to balance the budget they always start with doing it on the backs of state workers.

Then i suggest a private sector job for you State Worker since you seem so disheartened with your job. We all are having to take some grief with the times that we are living in layoffs, insurance increase, retirement taken away because of new contracts.Be happy that you still have those things to look forward to.If lawmakers decide to charge you a small fee for insurance then smile and be glad that you are better off than some, at least you have it.Don't be so greedy.
