Has School Discipline Gone Too Far?

Eighth-grader Savana Redding was scared and confused when an assistant principal searching for drugs ordered her out of math class, searched her backpack and then instructed an administrative aide and school nurse to conduct a strip search.

I am not against schools enforcing their policies. Lord knows that Drugs are rampant in middle schools now days.

My question is as follows:

a) School is a legal requirement. If the children do no go then the parents will be fined and jailed. Children may even be removed from the home.

b) Since the law requires that ALL children attend a school and most cannot afford (nor do they have the time) to home school; AND the schools are maintained as state run institutions then schools should be held to the highest scrutiny where the law is concerned

c) Law enforcement officers, whether in private homes or public places must follow the letter of the law. The constitution guarantees the right of any person against unlawful search and seizure. Procedures are to be followed.

With that being said. How can the school system get by with something that would get anyone else thrown in jail? Taking a child and saying "I think you have drugs, so take off your clothes" is immoral and unethical. I for one get tired of the school system that is paid by me to teach my child overtake my rights as a parent. If you think my child is hiding drugs, then you call ME and make sure I am present. Cops can't question a Minor without the parents or Legal Counsel present... What gives the school the right to?
