Crash Claims Allen Man

An Allen man has died after running his pickup off a Coal County road and slamming into a tree.

Notice the media usually always says "died and not wearing seat belts. Wonder how many die due to wearing them?

probly not many or the numbers would be diferent.

Jeeps, you may be right, but I just can't recall seeing any numbers on this. I mean I feel sure there are lots of people that die because they DID have on their seatbelt and wasn't allowed to be thrown free

Did some looking and found a web site that had these stats. In 2000 42,950 accidents with seat belts,11,622 deaths. 31,657 accidents with out seat belts 17,672 deaths. Death rate with seat belts 27% Deaths with out seat belts 56%. More than double the death rate with out seat belts. There is no way to know the answer to your question. But one thing you can be sure of if you hit something hard enough to kill you with your seat belt on. You would diffidently die with it off. It is the old sky diving joke "Its not the fall that gets ya its the sudden stop at the end"

Thrown free to hit a tree, a fence, the road at high speed? Or better yet, thrown free to have the car roll over you or allow you to be hit by another car? I'll take my chances with the seat belt.

I think I am thinking more of the driver, those steering wheels smashing you in the chest seems pretty dang hard core.

So many young people died in this storm system. Hit by cars, slamming into the trees and leaving the freeway. Prayers for all incolved, it is a terrible thing.

I am with you on this one!! I just feel the need for the seat belt when I drive. I have been in accidents when I have a laugh and wonder whats the point of the seat belt if I still hurt. Well, just think what could of happened if I didn't. Been hurt more (and a ticket) or even killed. The way I see it is this. If you go out on the road, no matter how far you go, then you are fair game to law enforcement to get caught and get a ticket. When I take my cat with me, I put him in his carrier and then put the carrier in a seat belt.

2 died in atoka county wearing seat belts just a few days before this one. It was speed that killed them too.
