Single parent trend DDN 7/28

Single parent trend brings concern. Isnít that the 91% social responsibility, not the 9% controlled by the school? No amount of funding educational projects is going to change that fact and today many teens believe that single parenting is fine. If theĒ familyĒ does not inspire the child, there is no amount of inspiration rendered by the school that will accomplish it. That is Arne Duncanís philosophy; the school is a garden and every child will develop into a flower. I donít believe that. Donít we have to weed and cultivate to allow the crop to grow? That is isnít to say that those plants will/may not return to the garden after some modification/rehabilitation, but I donít believe that transformation is the primary duty of the school. The rate of single parent families has tripled since 1970 and so far the schools have not been able to stem the tide. Why would we surmise that by throwing more educational money at the problem would work today. Schools are there to educate those that desire an education. Social agencies must deal with the other issues. It is unfair to the students and teachers requiring schools to spend resources trying to solve social issues.
