"Amish" heaters and EdenPURE heaters--Watch OUT!

The so-called "Amish" heater, or "Heat Surge" electric heater and the EdenPURE heater promoted by Paul Harvey, are over priced, overpromoted sucker bait items. You can either spend hundreds of dollars on these approximately 1500-watt (maximum setting) heaters or you can get a heater at Walmart, Tru-Value Hardware, Lowe's, or hundreds of other palces for MUCH LESS--as little as $25.00--that will put out the same amount of heat and heat the same amount of space. The ad for EdenPURE claims it will heat up to a 1000-square foot room. If you just fell off the turnip truck, you might believe that, but bear this in mind. A simple, ordinary, hand-held electrical hair dryer on the high setting will produce the same heat output, about 5000 BTUs as the EdenPURE or the "Amish" Heat Surge heaters. A sales representative for EdenPURE told me that their heat was a "different kind of heat," which is pure MALARKY. Heat is heat, and 5000 BTUs will NOT heat 1000 square feet of a typical dwelling under winter conditions; it simply will not produce that amount of heat. The advertisements for both these hokey heaters assume that you will turn down your thermostat for most of your house and move these units from room to room to stay warm and comfy. But you can do the same thing with a much cheaper heater! Forget about the Amish and forget about the EdenPURE. Tell Paul Harvey to stuff it! If you need an electric heater, spring for maybe $40 or $50 and buy a good little portable one from your local retail source. It will sure be easier to move from room to room that either of those overbuilt, cosmeticized contraptions that are being sold all over the place to gullible folks by sleazy marketing techniques like the ads with the chin-bearded patriarch lovingly polishing up the "solid wood mantel." (That wood is solid, but it is NOT oak or cherry as the ads would have you believe--it is poplar stained with oak or cherry stain). Forget about any confidence you might have placed in that octogenarian huckster, Paul Harvey, now that I have told you the "rest of the story." One more thing--it is highly probable that one or both of these scam outfits has people cruising forums like this one and posting big "personal endorsements." Do not be misled by such canned propaganda! It is purely defensive on their part--attempted defense of the indefensible! Shame on these pirates!!

I tend to disagree. We ahve several friends that own the Edenpure. It has literally cut heating bills in HALF!

And it certainly isn't fair for you to "lump" the reputable and proven copper-coil Eden Pure technology into the same abusive diatribe of ONE overgrown paragraph..........combining.. ........ with the oft-advertised Amish Heat Surge Heaters, which any imbisol can tell is obviously a total scam & a rip-off sceme!

You're no doubt just generalizing about ANYTHING else you see advertised, because you're too C-H-E-A-P to go anywhere but "chinky-chinky Wal-Mart" to get your p.o.s. junk that'll last 1 1/2 years, then fall apart!!

We've had 2 Eden Pures ( one 750 watts, one 1500 watts) for going on three full winters now, and they're everything we expected them to be.... and more.
Even with a somewhat more-efficient and newer Bryant heat pump system, using the 2 Eden Pures during (extreme) cold days & nights has helped to cut the electric bill dramatically, allowing us to often turn the emergency electric blower heat off altogether!
I only wish we had the newer Eden Pure models...with the remote-control temperature controls!

Who cares if it lasts 2 years and dies. I paid 12 dollars for it. As for "feeling the heat" out of one or another heater. 1500 watts of heat is 1500 watts of heat,period.It gets my room just as warm. Now a heat pump is a different story. Its like a refrigerator,cooling the outside and heating the inside,so the heat you get is the power to run it,plus whatever heat it moved from outside. The problem is,they work best in mild climates.
Im not impressed with any electric heater. Its a very simplistic technology that is very hard to improve,unless you can make it smaller or lighter,or cheaper.

This discussion is very intriguing, so I went to EdenPure's Web site at www.edenpureusa.com/... to see what the manufacturer has to say. I know most of the discussion is about the room heater, but I thought the fireplaces looked handsome, so I clicked there and read what EdenPure posted. One sentence in particular jumped out at me:

The FIREPLACE uses FUSION to create and maintain ultimate comfort levels.

FUSION? REALLY? Wow. I'm no physics geek, but fusion (excluding the culinary and music worlds) relates to what happens in a nuclear reactor, doesn't it? Sooo.... off to Google and Dictionary.com and a few other sources to get some info about fusion.

Indeed, fusion is the process of combining two light elements into one heavier element. In the process, pantloads (an arcane scientific unit of measurement) of spare electrons are tossed into the atmosphere creating nice, clean heat as a byproduct.

Bottom line is that if EdenPure's claim of using fusion is correct, we can merrily withdraw our military forces from the Middle East and not give North Korea another thought. If those rogue regimes and evil-doers want to develop thermo-nuclear weapons, why, for a couple of hundred US dollars, anyone can order a miniature nuclear reactor cleverly designed as a fireplace (in either oak or cherry) and have it delivered directly to their address of choice!

The only mystery remaining in my poor, shriveled brain is how in the dickens the oak and cherry mantles can weigh precisely 58.4 pounds each. Every single one of them. Not even one-tenth of a pound difference between oak or cherry, two woods of different densities and weight per identical volume. Come to think of it, even pieces of the same species of wood cut to precisely the same dimensions don’t weigh precisely the same amount. There goes Mother Nature for ya, muckin’ up the works again.

I can't help it if Edenpure hires idiots to write and proofread copy, but those ARE the company's words. Not sure I'd trust a company that can't tell the diff between fusion and diffusion. And what's in it for you, anyway? You're a little to rabid about the wonders of this product ... any disclosures you should make?

While I have been a fan of a number of the products Mister harvey has promoted over the years (i.e. still using my Stanley Thermos each and every day!) I would have to question the "sense" of this device.
Simply put, 1500 watts of heat is 1500 hundred watts of heat. From whence it comes, it is still generated through the consumption of electricity.
The EFFICIENCY of the mechanism changing electrical energy into radiant heat may be significantly higher and the manner in which it is circulated through the structure (mechanically circulated "fan blown" air versus simple radiated "convection" heat) probably are significant as well.
HOWEVER... the real savings comes from the fact that the average consumer WILL turn down the home thermostat lowering the energy usage needed to heat the ENITIRE building (Always a good way to curb energy consumption!) while using the supplemental device, be it Eden Pure or Wal Mart "special" to make OCCUPIED rooms more comfortable.
Again, the economic impact of each instance of using supplemental heat is based on the efficiency of the auxiliary heading device and the extent that the thermostatic settings controlling the primary heating source is reduced.
Bottom line is that y'all are ALL Correct! All that differs is the amount of efficiency of the auxillary heating source.
Enough said... and now back to our scheduled programming!

Well I've seen the Amish Fireplaces and I have to admit the flame is pretty. We went ahead though bought and Edenpure heater earlier this winter and it's worked out really well for us. We found it here at www.pureenergystore.com . They don't have an internet ordering site but you can call them with questions.

The Edenpures seem to work out well in houses that have heat pump systems.
At least they do in ours...

We let our 6-year-old Bryant heat pump do its thing until it gets down to about 20-25 F.
Temperatures lower than that, we've got into the habit now of shutting the thermostadt off completely, and letting our two Edenpures heat our long ranch house from either end.

Unless it gets below, say, 5 degrees F, we'll not use the "emergency" electric auxilary heat.
It simply doesn't heat as evenly as the Edenpures; and frankly, we've found that it's quite a bit more EXPENSIVE!

If your Eden Pure is not putting out heat, the filter is dirty. Unplug it, clean the filter, reinstall and try it again. I have 2 Eden Pure heaters and they work as advertised. They have cut my propane usage to almost nothing and have not raised my electric usage by much.

I also tried one of the "Amish' heaters. They look neat, but are not half the heater the Eden Pures are. BTW, the Amish heater has a 30 day money back guarantee.

I do not work for any of the companies that make, sell or market either Eden Pure or Amish fireplaces. I work in medical products. I am simply stating my experience with the heaters. You guys bitch all you want about products you don't like, and I will keep my money instead of giving it to Silgas. Fair enough?
