Why here when there are dozens of large "VACANT"stores to be redeveloped? The word on the street has it that Wal-Mart wanted to redevelope the saturn dealer on RTE 112 in Medford but the Eddingtons squashed it because it was too close to thier house.Well before they bulldoze 20+ acres in a residental area shouldnt they start at the old Home Depot @112+Rte27 or the soon to be totally abandon bellport outlets on the south side of sunrise or the empty walbaums in swan nusury commons or the old empty hollywood video Thier is so much empty commercial buildings in the area and focus east patchogue welcomes this location with open arms!!How much was thier check for????This insane location must be changed.

You are correct Darren, the proposed site is totally inappropriate!
Besides the impact a big box store will have on ever revitalizing Main Street, the traffic cannot be supported by the current roads. The Hospital Rd bridge would have to be changed, the North Sunrise Service Rd would have to be widened and extended, & the enviromental impact would be horrible!!

Point of interest.
The proposed Walmart is on land owned by LaBonne Vie Apartments. The management is urging its residents to support this proposal. They also want to hold a community meeting there with the elected officials, and taxpaying homeowners. Can you say CONFLICT OF INTEREST.
All those opposed should contact Brookhaven Councilman Tim Mazzei, and Connie Keppert.

Darren
sorry it took so long to reply
Call Tim Mazzie's office and complain, also ask when and where a meeting is to be held?
Also call planning board as they will be voting on this site soon We are creating a web page for this debacle. Will keep you posted.
Focus East Patchogue civic is in favor of this project although I don't know why.
They are to hold a meeting on this as well.

This is insane. I live 5 minutes away from the area where this Walmart is going to be built. Not only is it difficult to get over that bridge already by Sunrise, but there is a HOSPITAL not even a mile south of where Walmart will be built. Hospital Road is only 2 lanes. How on earth could you build a store where there is going to be a tremendous amount of traffic so close to a hospital?! not only is there the hospital, but on the west side of Hospital Road where Walmart will be built is Fish Ticket Reserve. We preserve this area because of all the animals and plants and ecosystems living in it. How can they beleive that these habitats do not exist 10 feet across the road. It is insane. I will do all I can to prevent this. And by the way I'm only 18 years old, and I realize the impact of this building.

Brookhaven hospital will be 300 FT away or about 1/8 th of a mile from this insane location as far as a reserve accross the street that just shows how little focus east patchogue or the planning dept or our local govt looked into this .Foley is looking at a new job in a matter of days so I dont even know who to complain to.

1) Old Home Depot at 112 and Sunrise: Raymour and Flanagan own the land now and HomeGoods also signed a lease with them.
2) Wal-Mart would not be big enough for Swan Commons, and there's a rumor going around that Shoprite's going there. An even weirder rumor was that SR would take the Walgreens and Waldbaums space and Walgreens would move over to the former Hollywood.

Honestly, I think the only decent alternative spot is the nearly dead Outlet Center 1. A Walmart on the Saturn 112 site would be almost as comically bad as the Hospital Road location.

There's so much wrong with East Patchogue right now that other than the bad location, there's nothing really horrible about Wal-Mart moving in compared to what already is in East Patchogue and Bellport.

WalmartLI.org freaks out because they're UFCW 1500. While I defend the job they do for their constituents, the reality is that Stop & Shop, Pathmark and all the other supermarkets need to realize that they have to adapt to compete with the big box stores. It's survival of the fittest. Most metro area supermarkets are so behind the curve that it is easy for other stores to pick off their business. If they don't pick up inspiration from stores like Wegmans or Publix, they'll be pining for the fjords.

Chances are.that Mazzei has his hands in this deal and that's why its going to happen unless their is an over whelming opposition form the voters.

I agree with you completely. Has anyone tried contacting Walmart to voice their opinion? It boggles my mind as to why they can't occupy one of the already vacant parcels in the area. They shouldn't be allowed to destroy 20 valuable acres when there is so much to choose from. What about the old movie complex site on the Long Island Expressway?? The town will be holding meetings in the near future. Everyone needs to be vocal!! Get involved. Walmart was turned down in Rocky Point, but not without a fight.

its quite simple...if Wal-Mart builds and uses existing buildings , or redevelops a property it cannot acress the NYS IDA system. Wal-Mart will receive millions from NYS in IDA Money if this project is approved. When you add the 12.5 Million it is estimated the Hospital Road Bridge rebuild will cost, the 10 million to re-do the off ramp of Sunrise Hwy at Hospital Road. When u add it all up, thats some pretty expensive underwear your getting at Wal-Mart.
