Does anyone remember a double murder in 1995 or 1996 on Matinecock Lane in East Islip? My nephew just purchased a house on that block and we'd like to know the details. Any information you have would be a great help.

Tommy Burns killed his father and his father's girlfriend. I grew up across the street and can verify that the father was very abusive.

I haven't found much information on this but I can tell you he is prison for the rest of his life. He probably would have gotten off with killing the father but the father's girlfriend was an innocent bystander

He transferred to my high school, and he was a fairly quiet/polite kid. It didn't take my high school very long to see that he clearly was being abused at home. In EVERYBODY'S opinion we all felt for him and his bro. He was not a bad person and any one of us could have had the same outcome had we been beatup on a day to day basis. I'm not saying it was right but the word karma comes to mind. as for his fathers girlfriend she was no saint either

Why did he live with his father instead of his Mom if there was so much abuse? I lived in the neighbor and heard all about it...obviously that was the doing of a very abused child but I do t understand why if people knew about it all why nothing was done...aren't u then just as responsible?

Hey LeeLee, your correct, you don't understand! He did live me n my mother for his entire life until about a year before the horrible night that changed our lives forever. Obviously you have no clue what physical n mental abuse can do to a a child. My mother had rules, my father didn't, and just like most other teenagers, he wanted to party and not have to answer to anyone about it. My mother tried everything possible to get away from my father but it was impossible! You sound very ignorant and uneducated with your comment! I truly hope you never have to go through what we did, but if you do, you will have your answer to your last question!

I grew up in Islip and went to Islip High School with the defendant, Thomas Burns. He was a very disruptive classmate, always looking to fight someone to prove his "toughness". If anyone in that school in his graduation class was bound for prison at some point, he would be a good candidate. His father may have been abusive, but there was definitely a ticking time bomb waiting to explode in young Thomas.

I have only met Tommy since he began serving time with my brother Jeff at 2 separate facilities, and during his time at Greenhaven I had the opportunity to get to know him and he is a very nice guy. Having a family member that is also serving a life sentence I must comment on the person who said he was aggressive and everyone knew he would end up in prison, how dare you that. No one has the right to minimize a person's life based on how they deal with the abuse or why they choice to return to an abusive situation, unfortunately it is not only common in children but also in abused woman. I will say this though, why bother commenting or looking him up if he was such a horrible person??

Because it still intrigues me that someone you grew up with was capable of that. I'm tired of reading about people who hardly know him commenting on what a nice guy he is. Are you kidding me? He's a murderous thug. He terrorized a bunch of people in high school with his side kick Tim Donohue. So, I'm sorry your family member is serving a life sentence, I don't know him or her so I can't comment. But as for Mr. Burns, I do know him and the type of monster he was. So, as long as people keep commenting on his rehabilitation and his nice guy acts, I will remind people why he is where he is. I never liked the guy. So I will keep commenting and post stories and memories of my time at Islip HS during the early 90's. I feel no sorrow for him. How about the time him and Timmy drugged a female in the back of Timmy's large truck and took advantage of her? Bet you never heard about that huh?

What an idiotic comment. I went to school with Tommy and he was always a good guy. Did he have some issues, of course, that tough guy persona was just the way it was at Islip HS. Tommy and Nick were both good people if you got to actually know them.

You may need to seek some counseling buddy. Sorry you were picked on in high school, but that was almost 30 years ago, let it go already. For christ sake, his Mom reads this site, have some respect for her at least. Your comments show what a little person you are.

I'm fine pal. I'm not the one needing counseling. I've gone on to be very successful and raising a beautiful family. I was not picked on in high school, that was one of the best times in my life. I apologize to Mr. Burns mother and brother for what has transpired. But I will not apologize for bringing up painful memories of what truly went on. I knew Thonas, was in some classes with him, knew people who he hung out with, witnessed first hand his handiwork. My comments will bring to light things that were never discussed or brought up because there were some who WERE afraid of him and didn't want to face the repercussions for pointing the finger. This is what is wrong with society today. Everyone feels bad for the criminal, and the police are the bad guys. Ass backwards! Wake up! Everything happens for a reason and I believe in karma. If my comments hurt, that's because the truth does hurt sometimes. And if anyone that was ever hurt or assaulted by Mr. Burns can see this, these posts are for you. God Bless.

Wow. It's amazing what you can find on the internet....
I dated Tom very briefly in the early 90s. We were young. He was intense, moody, and seriously troubled. When I broke up with him, he pulled a knife of me....I'll never forget the look in his eyes as he threatened to harm me. Pure evil washed over him. Had it not been for my friends intervening, I could have been seriously hurt - or worse. The "nice guys" I know don't threaten teenage girls with switch blades. It's a shame that he never got the help he so desperately needed and let the darkness in him ruin his life.
