Let me start by saying how offended I am by the terminology used in this article. I'm not sure if it was Newsday, or the actual laws that dictated the use of the term "incompetent" and "mentally handicapped", but I feel the term "developmentally disabled" is more contemporary and could have been used instead. I heard in church that the injured individual was taken to the ER and released after receiving three stitches. That does not sound like a serious head injury to me.

To Eileen,
You're caught up on the latest buzz words used by the author? How sad and pathetic...You stated that 3 stitches doesn't sound serious...Are you a Dr? Nurse? What if those stitches were across his eye, would that be considered severe?...As the Mother of a DD, MR, Incompetent individual we don't care how you refer to him as long as he isn't ABUSED, not in need of 1 stitch 2 stitches or 1,000 stitches!!! The counselor was wrong. Oh dear me! is the word "counselor" outdated? Tell me what word I could use to make you understand abuse is wrong to any student MR, DR, or "normal" students...

I think forwarding on information you heard from someone in church is a terrible idea. Incidents like this always get investigated by the OMRDD State office. Wait till their QA report comes out. IT could have been that this counselor acted appropriately in the take down, but something unforeseen happened. We just don't know.

maryhaven is famous for being liers ! when you put the children in their care you are convinced that the care is everything you ever wanted for them.
maryhaven does not have parent support groups they keep you from meeting other parents.they watch the parents who are strong advocates and then they percieve you as trouble because you question their ethics.you have to many young counclors who have no idea on how to raise children let alone disabled kids with disabilities.abuse is everywhere in this agency from residential to day programs.
maryhaven has a reputation of the best, but behind those closed doors watch out for your kids.always carry a camera and take pictures of your kids and make sure when you see bruises find out if it was documented,if not call the cops.stay away from this agency they are far from what you expect.to many abuse cases swept under the rug.if your kids tell it would be inconclusive because what does your child know, they are confused.

Let me start by saying there is a fine line between self defense and abuse...some of the MR/DD population can be dangerous to workers and the public that is why their own families cannot handle them at home...they do not realize that hitting/kicking/spitting/bitin g/pulling hair/punching/or waving a knife or acting violent can be a dangerous thing..they have no judgement of danger...for a worker to be threatened with their life with such a low paying job is ridiculous they are not trained police officers they are low paid untrained workers....they watch your child or adult that you cannot handle yourself and the responsibility given to young college kids at the rate of pay they are offered it's no wonder there arent' more of these cases...there is not enough supervision or councelors in these homes with the proper training for what is happening...if they would hire more experienced people (or train them properly) at a better pay rate maybe these cases wouldn't be happening.

I could be way off base but to me it doesn't seem like anyone has said anything that hits the nail on the head with this problem. All the statements have validity but the heart of the problem is the lack of communication between individual and care they receive at Maryhaven. More focus should be put on helping all individuals to be as independant as possible so they are able to control as much of their lives as possible. Monitoring workers is so subjective and open to interpretation. It seems like a waste of time as who is going to watch the footage and do the interpretation of what they are seeing. It is a long arduous process to communicate in non verbal forms but once established it would be a huge step towards independence. Maryhaven is a fine institute and does the very best they can to maintain a growing environment for all the individuals in their care. Yes of course their are ill suited people working there and they are constantly weeded out as quickly as possible. Don't bash parents that turn to Maryhaven for help and don't bash the staff that is working there. Be supportive of both for the better of the individuals. The work of making an individual more independant(Even the tiniest bit) is so rewarding for all parties. Empowering the individuals with communication is the only long term remedy to grind potential abuse to a stop.

My daughter lives at Maryhaven, and I have to say although you feel they are not always listening, they are.
Let me tell you abuse is not from the agency itself. When any agency hires someone and that person is an abuser that person will be caught.Maryhaven has always done their best to help.
We may not always agree with the plans they put in motion, and we may not get it,they will work with you to allow room for growth.
I have listened to countless parents and caregivers who belittle this program, just note your wrong.I am one of the strongest advocate for my child, and if I believed for one minute that Maryhaven was abusive my child would have been out along time ago.
To the ones who condemn this place or other agengies I find you are not happy campers no matter what is offered to you.You blame everyone because you have disabled kids.
Embrace your kids they are God's Gift to you.
I have recommended parents to put their kids their, and they have and guess what we are all happy!
