I wish both families the best. I am sorry for the loss of Matt. I hope that Mike and his baby have a speedy recovery.

I live in Centerburg and I know the Peter's family. They do not deserve this. When they say it is unclear as to why Mr. Knecht went left of center it is clear to me: he was probably passing a car that was not going fast enough for him. I see this every single day and I see people narrowly escape terrible accidents just becasue they are trying to get somewhere faster. THIS is the result! I am sorry that someone had to lose their life because they cannot be patient and more sorry that an innocent little girl is still fighting for her life in the hospital. Maybe this will help people wake up but I doubt it. There are countless reminders on Rt 3 in the form of crosses and wreaths where people have lost their lives. Every single one of them have been the result of people going left of center. Very sad!

My brother roomed with Matt at the Merchant Marine Academy for 3 years. I only met Matt a few times, long enough to know he was a good friend to my brother and a great guy with a great future. This is so sad.
May god watch over him and the others involved in this accident.

Perhaps Michelle from Youngstown should have a bit more compassion for the friends and family of Matt. Posting such an insensitive comment on here is just tasteless. The bottom line is that NO ONE knows what happened to cause this horrific accident and the last thing anyone needs is a lecture! Matt was a great guy and I hope others can understand the EXTREMEME sensitivity required at a time like this!

Matt Knecht was a great guy. I graduated a year ahead of him at Merchant Marine Academy in New York and worked with him for a year in Crystal City, VA. Matt was one of those few "Good Guys" who always looked out for everyone else before himself. My deepest condolences to Matt's family. He will never be forgotten!

I feel great sorrow and heartbreak for the Peters family, but to make an ACCUSATION about the other guys actions is very WRONG!
He has a family, and I'm sure he was loved.
Remember...he did die.

How dare you assume something, then act as if what you accuse him of is fact.
Shame on you.
Until you know the truth, you should keep your opinion about him to yourself.
You could possibly be adding more pain to an already painful event.

Many things could have happened:
Car Malfunction?
Tire blow out?
He could have passed out?
He could have gotten distracted?
He could have been avoiding a rabbit?
He could have had a blind spot?
He could have had a stroke?

...there are many possibilities.
Be a little more sensitive next time.
Blaming the dead before you know facts is wrong. He can't defend himself.

Really Michelle from Youngstown?? It's clear to you. Who do you think you are making bold assumptions based on your opinion. If it is really clear to you-- then you must have seen it first hand, and if that's the case then the state highway patrol is looking for you as a witness.

It's unbelievable to me that you would even post something as ignorant as that.

I am the cousin of the man who died and for you to say that it was his fault for going around another car. you have no idea and i understand your pain for the peters family, my family wishes the peters all the best aswell. but since u feel they didnt deserve and my cousin did. let me tell you a few things about my cousin matt. He was a luitenant in the navy voluntarily went to iraq. dedicated his entire life to this country. i dont know what matt was doing the second of the accident but i do know he didnt deserve this either. it was an accident plain and simple plaenty of lives have changed that day. and when i read what u wrote i was disgusted. how dear you blmae a dead man who cannot defend himself. once again the knecht family would like to send our symoathy for this tragedy. but please dont blame a man who gave his life defending you.

thank you to all the support on here for that terrible comment from an obviously bitter and resentful person. as u can tell by my typing i was so upset when i read that. matthew was a godfather to my child and my cousin who protected me all through childhood. never ever did he deserve some stranger bored surfing the web to comment about his death. god bless you all for understanding our pain.

Thank you for posting that.
Telling those who didn't know him, that he was an incredible American and a good person is a great way to forever solidify his legacy.

Sometimes it amazes me that people hear about stories like these, and can't instantly feel empathy. I'll just never understand some people.
Maybe it's because I have 4 children...my oldest son is 14, and I picture him driving soon...and I know how easily accidents can happen. My heart breaks for Matt (which is my 13 year old sons name) and his family:(

As for the post that accused Matt of being reckless...maybe she/he jumped the gun, maybe even possibly feels bad now. The poster hasn't returned to defend the post. Hopefully she has thought it through...maybe?
A good life lesson.

If not, then all I can say is: Mans inhumanity to man....

It is still under investigation and before this gets into a battle, there is more to the story and some of you may want to stop attacking the post that bothers you. Regardless, it's a tragedy and the victims and families of both are dealing with a tragic situation and it shouldn't be made worse with this kind of posting.
