Everytime I go to the Dollar General I get treated like I'm about to steal something. When I go the grocery store in town beside the $2.00 mark up on everything I get treated funny. No You could say no it dosent happen but it does the blank looks the follwing me down the aisle the so called good citzens who think they will be on the news for catching a criminal, but I'm not that guy. I was sick one rainy night I took my van to Mount Vernon to go to the hospital. It was really coming down and flooding so I switched to my SUV the Sherriff saw me and followed me to the hospital, I'm sorry that's not normal or right While he's checking my tags like I'm dirty I was in serious pain. I have two step daughters who go to school in Centerburg and if I pick them up I get funny looks or Parents even ask what I'm doing. I not going to lie I HATE CENTERBURG they are truly racist in my eyes PERIOD.

Did it occur to you that maybe you are being a bit paranoid? I went to Centerburg schools and there were black kids enrolled who were very popular. As far as the police go, I was pulled over in Mt Vernon several weeks ago because it was 2:30 am. I was on my way back from a family reunion which was a 3 hour drive for me and my children. The reason was I went left of center. I didn't, but how are you gonna prove it. I didn't get a ticket but I know the excuse to pull me over was not legit and they wanted to see if I was drinking.

Of course Kalee you would say that living in Johnstown but if you go to Columbus on Long Street or On Main Street and you will see racism first hand. It dosent mater if it is White against Black or Black against White or whatever Racism is just the word. It is not fair that you get judged for the color of your skin, God made us all equal and the fact is people in Centerburg treat me funny. It is not fair but I guess it is the way of life.

I just wanted to let you know that I dont think it is because you are black that you get treated that way. I am white and moved to Centerburg 2 years ago from Columbus and feel the same way. Infact I tell my friends about it all the time! Everytime I go to the Dollar General or the grocery I feel all eyes on me.....like they know i am not from there. I really think that it is the small town way, everybody grew -up together and everyone knows eachother and if your not from there they ( some) tend to check you out. BUT the people saying stuff to you at the school is totally not right and would agree that is totally unacceptable behavior.

Not sure what living in Johnstown has to do with anything but I worked in Columbus for several years and I do realize that racism exists. And you are right it does go both ways. And I didn't say it was right, I was just speaking from my own experiences in Centerburg. I tend to agree with Newby on this one. It is a small town and most small towns are like that.

Look, a lot of areas in rural Ohio are racist, but I can assure you Centerburg for the most part isn't, having lived here most of my life aside from living overseas in the Army. The stares you get are cause the older townspeople probably don't know you. My wife is from out of state and gets the same treatment, yet my mom is greeted at every corner. If you don't like it than move out, but as for me, I work in Columbus but live in Centerburg because the schools are great, the cost of living is cheap, and the crime rate is very low. There's racists everywhere, but don't label a whole town that way, otherwise it shows you're no better than they are.

I think it is funny people say it is not the town it has to be you, but the fact is there is major racism in Centerburg. If I could move I would, OUT OF OHIO. Now its been a year since I wrote this and things have changed. At Bill's Marathon They are very nice, I have met some nice people in Centerburg. Yes the school system here is the best in the state. Centerburg has a good high school [Not the footbal team though] To put this in perspective people Dollar General in town treat me funny and not that small town BS. I go to Dollar General on Cleveland and 161 in Columbus and no eyes they all say hi so REALLY what is it? I think some people just don't want admit it, GOD made us all equal and I wear pant just like the next white man, I work hard to provide for my wife and kids and guess what I JUST STAY IN THE HOUSE TILL IT"S TIME TO GO WORK.
ALSO I don't really worry about this issue because a lot people wont say it to my face and I mean that and also I forgot there some things you know when people are staring at you police, kids, pets in this town too, no I'm just joking but I been here for a while and I used to live in a big city but I know the difference PEOPLE TRUST WHAT I'M SAYIN'

1. 96% of blacks voting for Obama was NOT racist?

Personally, I am tired of people like you crying about racism.

In reality which race has destroyed the inner city?

Which race has the higest rate per capita in prison?

Which race victimizes their own citizens more than any other race... Then blames it on racism?

Go ahead, fall for the racism trap. Go wander the earth thinking that everyone is hating on poor old you b/c of your race.

Maybe you can get a 600 dollar a month check for your troubles.

I've never meet a rich person who believed in racism.

People who beleive they are victims of racism are usually utter losers who end up on welfare.

That probably describes you. BTW I bet you enjoy those great black role models, AKA the rappers.

What a joke.

MR POFF, I do have to agree with you on "some" of your points. I have visited Centerburg my whole life due to my grandma and grandpa living here, and to me it was always such a nice place to visit. I moved to centerburg in 07' I have two girls and my oldest is mixed. I have noticed that some of the places that i go in town do give looks and watch you like you say. my daughter has been asked if she was adopted because she was black and her younger sister and I are white. And I have been called an N lover. But in the same token, that is just a handful of ignorant people. For the most part everyone in this town has been very welcoming to me and BOTH my childeren. She is popular in school and gets invites to all the parties by her classmates. I know for a fact that it's just not Centerburg that has rasit in it. Her father and I got turned down for an apt. in Pittburgh PA as soon as the couple saw a black man and a white woman come to look at the place. They didn't even give us the application, they just said "oh, no. This isn't for you." And when we lived in Columbus the black girls would tell my daughter that she was too light and the white girls would tell her she's too dark! They said she was the color of dirt! So don't piont the finger and one little town that has by the way come a LONG way in the racit cattagory. Racisim is everywhere and people need to realize that there is no white and black that we are all shades of brown.Next time you get a crayon box pull out a black crayon and a white crayon do they mach anybodies skin? Now get out all the shades of brown, you will find one that matches each and everyones skin tone.

First Off. Mike you have issues you must be one of the people who cheated at Centerburg with that reply. Second people I'm am far from myself being racist but when I stated my anger for being looked at funny all I see is a bunch of replys of excuses. The president or Kanye West [Rappers] did'nt have anything to do with this conversation. We all as americans, christians or etc should look at our-selfs as equals not a black / white or anything, we are in a time where the economy is terrible our school system just got hit with the worst school scandal in Centerburg history, so instead of going on with this issue I'M COMPLETE-LY OVER IT BECAUSE WE AS A CITY HAVE BIGGER THINGS TO DEAL WITH THAN THIS. Probably a little bit of what everyone is saying has some truth to it. Yes, some people ARE racist while other's are NOT. Some people use the color of their skin as an excuse (every race), while others don't. You continue to be a "victim" if you WANT to. Part of moving to an area where you are unknown, IS the issue when people who've had generations of family here they will naturally be curious of any outsider.I moved here 10-11 yrs ago and felt the same way initially. Some people FEAR what they don't know. You just have to get over your paranoia, get involved in your community and maybe even be the one who makes the first move..."Hi my name is such & such, how are you?" Sometimes it's just a matter of education, cultural diversity has to be taught & learned..it's not something we're born with. If someone responds in a negative way or not at all, SO WHAT?! Move on, that person isn't someone you should waste your breathe on. Life is waaaay to short to alway's worry about what other people think. Life is to short to waste our energy on anger, negativity and ignorance. Don't we all have more important things to focus on? Like our family and friends who return love and kindness?

I guess the fact that we overwelmingly voted for a half black/half white man for president, who calls himself a black man, means nothing. racism is in the minds of the beholders. Well I think sexism is more prevalent than racism. women got the vote much later than the black man, women still get paid less than black men. U want to complain, try being a woman.
People in small communities look at anybody they don't know strangely. Protecting their families and friends. People in big cities don't give a crap about anything. Mr Poff if u want out of ohio, I hope u can get out. Go to a high crime don't give a crap place. Thats where you feel comfortable, go. But realize ur racism crap is how u feel about yourself, not how others feel about ur skin. Truly you prove yourself by your attitude and yours is racist. U reap what u sow.

I really think you are over reacting.. I mean seriously, not everyone that lives in Centerburg is as single minded as you are trying to put it to be. I've been a resident in Centerburg for over 10 yrs. I really like the fact that its quiet and not much goes on. But seriously to think that people hate you because of your color.. that's outrageous. My brother is married to a black woman and have 2 lovely daughters. We have family reunions all the time.. No one has treated them any differently than anyone else.

I have never heard of such sob stories, of "why don't you like me." People look at you because they don't approve of your relations with a white woman. I have good friends that are about to be married, she is black and he is white. I don't have to agree with it. It's not my life. Look at yourself, if you are that concerned about the way people react to you. Maybe you should change they way you react to them. You open the door, instead of looking around waiting on someone to greet you, greet them. I'm tired of hearing,I'm black an I don't get what I deserve. Stand up for yourself and be a man. You'll notice people will respect you for it.
