Consolidation is just misdirection as the trick continues. The trick is the continued wasteful expenditure of money.

We spend money on full time teacher salaries for a part time job. We are not an agrarian society any more, summers off for farming are a thing of the past. We build schools that we operate for 8 hours on only 180 days of the year yet these buildings cost millions.

We buy computers, but there is very little computer based instruction that could reduce labor costs. While every other industry has reaped rewards from efficiencies offered by modern technology, school instruction remains moribund and inefficient.

Live teaching is important for some types of instruction, and remedial help. For so much more instruction there is no reason for courses not to be prepackaged, video-recorded and consistent from district to district across the entire country.

Consolidation, with state aid incentives does not reduce taxes, it just shifts the burden to the state level of taxation. Consolidation of districts with different tax rates only forces people who paid a premium to live in a low tax district to now carry the tax burden for those who did not pay that premium when they bought their home. Another shifting of the tax burden.

Stop with the magic trick of moving the tax burden around, and start making schools more efficient in fact.

Great idea???, lets video tape one guy and sell the copies to the school districts. What are we going to do when "johnny" doesn't get it or is so distruptive that "Sally" is not able to concentrate? It is obvious by your post that you have not set foot inside a classroom in quite a long time.

We are all going down the tubes, getting killed by the highest taxes in the country. Merge all the districts into one statewide one as it is now in many other states. The only ones who will be hurt by this are the school district employees who are sucking us all dry!

do what you're doin' and you'll get what you're gettin'

Sh/it or get off the pot Long Island. You can't have everything and expect not to pay for it.

Hard times require hard choices. Either make a choice to improve your life or shut up. I'm really sick of all this whining.

The consultants said merger is not the way to go.
Westfield Curtis and Grunsiech deserve a medal for rejecting the study. With 75% of our students attending top ranked Westhampton Beach HS the BOE as elected officials made the right call. You get what you pay for and WB tuition costs a little more than Center Moriches. The community knows we have a solid k-8 program and approved the vote last last spring to keep choice of all 3 high schools.
Maybe 75% of the East Moriches students go to Westhampton for High School but do we actually know the reasons for that. Maybe it is because their friends are going there, their siblings went there. their parents went there, it has the appearance of being better.

There are many more taxpaying residents in East Moriches than there are students. Those taxpaying residents are the ones who voted down the last budget. There seems to be a conflict.

No conflict, The taxpayers said no more money for K-8 and to keep the choice of 3 high schools. Westhampton beach is a top 25 ranked long island HS and provides quality education. There is a small group in EM that want to eliminate Westhampton as a HS and use the small savings to enhance the K-8 program. There's no right or wrong. Do you fund K-8 enhancements or fund the top HS 75% students attend? The voters said keep HS choice.

Why doesn't the East Moriches School Board hire more teachers and administrators? I'm sure that will solve the problem.
One word - Austerity! East Moriches has been on austerity two out of the last three years. They have cut program after program just to survive. The elem students have become the sacrificial lambs just so their 8th graders have a choice of 3 high schools.

The truth is that EM wants WHB because it is cool plus the $20,000 a year tutition that EM pays to WHB for each student(each year) pays for the bells and whistles given to every WHB student. EM shuns Center Moriches but they forget that EM and CM kids play soccer, tball, softball, attend church and library programs, march in the parade, play in the same playground and eat fries at McDonalds together. Somehow when these kids get to 8th grade, CM is beneath EM. Its a very strange place to live these days

Well, send your kids to ESM. The High School is getting closer to what WHB has to offer if not better and at a cheaper price too! I can't wait for my two girls to go there. My girls go to one of the three schools now that needs a major change, but that's another story. Mr. Steimel the Principal along with his staff have really brought this school together. The scores, not that anyone cares, except newsday and the superintendent are just as good as WHB. Despite the flaws that may exist about this district, I think it's on the right track.
Sure our taxes are too high but whose isn't on this island anymore? If anything we need to get rid of the waste that exists in this district starting with ... You can fill in the blank!
