Old story. Short version. Village had four murals painted. Took longer than expected. They sat around for a while. Cost $5000. Allegations were made that someone was trying to keep them for themselves. Now hanging at closed hardware store. its really hilarious.

it is really low rent to put art work on a closed business. are we paying the people who own the building to use it as a billboard? it makes mastic beach look ridiculous. i wish they would put up the pictures in a place of pride. i cannot believe that this is where we would display artwork.

It is to late to repost them elsewhere. They have been destroyed right up to how they hung them. Whether paid for or not what an insult to the painter and felony to the taxpayers. Was this Gary's project? Don't be upset as the Mayor is just as guilty by again as always allowing you to do what you want. Sadly the two of you would of been good as Laurel and Hardy replacements only they were acting to be funny but you guys are pathetic.

I didn't see any pictures. What do you mean by destroyed? Weather? Graffiti? Details? Anyone? I missed seeing them. What a shame.

They were insured for $10,000. Attempts to catch the thief are ongoing. And if you believe this, HA HA HA HA!

What pictures?
the village was given a grant for pictures to be painted for display that showed the history of mastic beach. they hired an artist; who painted the pictures well over a year ago. the artist waited for months with the completed pictures in her apartment for instructions on what to do with them. They were finally picked up and never seen again. Nobody knew what happened to the pictures. Residents began to question what had happened to the money and/or the pictures. Finally, on Monday, the Pictures showed up. Some of them were hung around Smitty's (an abandoned hardware store which is for sale) Some of them were hung on Neighborhood Road and Park Drive.

Hanging the paintings this way; with no weather protection was insulting to the artist and to the people of mastic beach. It looked ridiculous and then it rained.(these pictures were on masonite and not sealed or protected in any way). This is a disgrace and an insult to all of us.

Thank you for the information. It almost sounds like it was intentional to see that they were destroyed. Really, really bad. The artist should be more pissed than anyone.$5,000 tossed to the rain. Someone should be held accountable for this.

The former Mayor knew damn well where the pictures were. They were at his house and his wife kept putting the Village off when asked for them. They were not ruined by the rain as they were sealed.

Mastic Peninsula Historical Society was given the grant, they came up with the concept and they hired the artist. The artist was to recreate art that was drawn by a young girl that hung in the William Floyd Estate. The art was to be hung to guide people to the William Floyd Estate.

There was a $5000 grant that was suppose to cover the cost of the artist as well as mounting and materials. The entire $5000 was given to the artist (some one's relative???)

The re-creatation were way too big and painted on masonite, making them very hard to display outdoors.

Because the Deputy Mayor signed off on the grant (so Mastic Peninsula Historical Society could qualify for the money) this fiasco got dropped in the lap of the Village, and nothing the Village does with them will ever be OK with some people.

And, by the way...these painting were under salt water for days after Sandy and held up very well.

This is a case of Gary covering his A$$ by sticking them out side and saying "look, we hung them up". Just another waste of money from the 'Kings of Wasted Money'.

So, after all this time, all those people who claimed Gary pocketed this money are just flat out liars. Maybe the Mastic Peninsula Historical Society should explain how the artist was hired to produce the artwork, specifically did they give the artist any size parameters. If the artwork was intended to be displayed outside, it should have been properly weather-proof.
