Anadarko is not the greatest place to live. Apparently Shirley doesn't get out much. It is a ghetto. I know of a boy who almost was ran over in the cross walk at school. His mother called the police and told her he couldn't go by just her word and it was done on a private street going between the schools. She even followed the truck full of girls that left the scene and pointed it out to him. He knew the parents and said he would talk to them about it, yeah right!! About a month later a little child was hit on the same road and broke his or her arm.
The town is not growing because the council won't allow busineses to come to town. Get me out! |

i think that if you have never experienced a town outside of caddo county or even a normal city or town out of oklahoma you may think anadarko isn't that bad - but it is. it is by far one of the most depressed town's i have ever been too and i have lived in four different states. having attended the schools as a child i can tell you twenty years ago the town and school was very bad and it has only became worse with each passing year. this town is way below the standard compared to most towns across the u.s. and this is not the norm across the board.

"soon to be resident" you are absolutely correct. Life anywhere is what you make of it. i live in a big town plagued with drugs, gangs, crime and unemployment. but the choices i make for me and my family is what matters. i refuse to allow ourselves to be dragged into the life of the weak.

Anadarko doesn't seem to have changed any since I left it in 1985. I left in 1985 when I was 18 to seek a future somewhere else and ended up in Shreveport, La. where I have been since. If you want a perfect example of a ghetto town, then come down here and see for yourself. Murders, drug use, gang bangers, thugs, hookers, drug dealers, etc. happen on a daily basis and have only gotten worse over the years. Still, I have a great job and a better future than I would have had in Darko. I may decide to come home one day when I retire. It's still home and I guess it will always be.

I used to live in "Dodge" as we used to call it. The city needs to hire a promoter to contact business looking for a place to relocate with a ready to go labor force. There are so many empty buildings in town, Hollytex, old TG&Y, old Wal-mart and Homeland store. I remember the oil boom of 77-82. You could not rent a closet in town. The city needs to promote all these points. The city council needs to give new biz a tax incentive and other breaks to attract new ompanies there. Anadarko is a dying town and it does not have to be. The city council needs to get busy and save this place. We had to sell our family home that we had since 1948 because the was no reason to stay.

Well hopefully with the Tribe (Kiowa) buying Indian City and revitalizing it, that will bring more tourists into town. But it all takes time....don't give up on Dodge!! Ima be a resident pretty soon and looking forward to it!!

This al makes me sad.
I have read the early day stories. The people were strong and had high hopes. I wish there were pow-wows and drummings. I miss the water-melon, peanuts, and wind-mills creaking. Anadarko should draw on what is unique to the area. Foreign travelers would love to come see the crafts, dancing and tribal style and times that are prescious and rare today. I believe that tourism would be the way to go. When I say tourism-I mean an opportunity to teach, entertain and enlighten those who are seeking the 'new world' and its' history. It would be nice to have clean hotels and campgrounds. There is a good start with the museums and yes, Indian City. I think the nations of the Kiowa, Apache and all who live in Anadarko should get together and brain storm. There are a lot of exchange students who would love to see the dancing and hear the music and see the crafts. A good community center and great motel would certainly help. |

I also grew up in Dodge and got into lots of trouble. Luckily I was smart enough to go into the military, get married, go to college and get the hell out. The only thing I miss about the town is the old relationships, but they all got the HELL OUT OF DODGE like myself.
The citizens should hold the city officials accountable for the ghetto Anadarko has become and take a real close look at their salaries. Their salaries are public knowledge. I do believe that there are still citizens of Anadarko that love their town and have "roots". These people should be going after the officials or work to become a city official and make real changes.

.....I totally agree being from Dodge and still here in dodge and may be for a long while, lifelong resident..lol but I agree with what you have said because I hate to read the whinning from those who want to rag on our town..yea there are problems but if you have a "FAMILY" and your healthy and you do as you said make the best of things then our little town is pretty okay but I would like for my kids to go out and Discover! the big world out there because DARKO will always be Dodge and it will always be HOME!:) |

1 Then just GET OUT OF DODGE!! I don't think anybody is forcing you to stay there. If you thinks it's so bad the move. I'm sure NOBODY will miss you cause you sound like a racist pig....and obviously you've made a miserable life for yourself. And don't blame the system because you're stupid.....look in the mirror! |
