Cedartown Recreation Director

Regardless of who is Recreational Director, lets give them a chance. It is easy to downgrade and post things from their past but the past is the past. This town should work together to build each other up and not knock each other down. We need a supportive community to change things around and make Polk (Cedartown and Rockmart) known for good things, not all the negatives you hear. The first step to change is YOU.

@JMO....ditto, ditto, and ditto to the above advice. i dont know any of the folks mentioned here (and in other subjects and posts). but since moving here i am appalled at the personal attacks and negativity that some posters write...it not only is distatseful, but shows a lack of integrity, dignity and plain old courtesy. the Golden Rule is not a bad way to live one's life it seems, but it seems many posts 'cast the 1st stone' without introspection into their own lives.

@ stupid...when i mentioned ctown championships i wasnt talking about the rec dept...i was speaking of the high school football and baseball programs specifically that people were telling me about, and the athletes that came up through the rec dept while the colbert fellow was running it...i should have been clearer.
being new to the area, and seeing the success of the football season of 2011, i heard folks talking about they haven't enjoyed a successful football season like that since a coach named kelly and they were really big on a longtime coach named hill...i think those were the names if i remeber them correctly.
and they stated that the then rec director was this colbert fellow and he had huge numbers of kids sign-up year-after-year and they ran the same offenses and defense the high school did to prepare the kids.
they also stated the cobert fellow developed a lot of sponsors that kept the department funded pretty well.
like everything else there are a lot of different opinions, and yours is different than what i heard. doesn't matter to me other than i am one that likes to see the youth of an area have the most opportunity they can after school to stay out of trouble, and sports and a successful rec program is one good way to that.
the more kids, the better.

I WOULD LIKE TO ADD TO YOUR POST THAT THIS YEAR HIGH SCHOOL PRODUCTIVE GOOD PLAYERS CAME FROM CEDARTOWN PANTHERS YOUTH TRAVEL FOOTBALL LEAGUE AND I HEARD THAT IS THE REASON THEY ARE KEEPING IT ROLLING BECAUSE OF THE CHIDLREN REALLY LIKE THE ATMOSPHERE AND WHAT THEY ARE BEING TAUGHT AND THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS THAT I HAVE TALKED TO BRAGGED ON THE CEDARTOWN PANTHERS FOOTBALL TRAVEL LEAGUE. SHOUTS OUT TO THE ONES THAT CARE ABOUT ALL AND I MEAN ALL THE CHILDREN NOT JUST A FEW AND THAT IS WHAT CEDARTOWN NEED FOR EVERY SPORT. RIGHT NOW OUR REC DEPARTMENT SUCK AND IT IS A CRYING SHAME. PEOPLE HAVE GOT TIRED OF THEIR CHILDREN BEING OVERLOOKED AND NOT TAUGHT THE GAME GOOD LIKE OTHER CHILDREN BECAUSE OF WHO THEY ARE AND WHO THEY DO NOT KNOW. PEOPLE STICK TOGETHER AND CEDARTOWN CAN BE CHANGED BECAUSE GOD HAS MORE POWER THAN ANY MAN OR WOMAN! STAND UP FOR WHAT IS RIGHT AND PUT OUT WHAT IS NASTY AND CORRUPTED!

Panthers, what a joke. My son played with them years to ago. That year Panthers had teams in 5 and 6, 8 under, 9 and under, 10 and under and 12 and under. Larry Neal Coached the young team and they were very successful. Ryan Prince and Travis Ragsdale coached the 10 and under and they had a productive season. The rest of the teams had very good athletes but their coaches were a bunch of thugs. They were almost kicked out of the league they were in because of poor leadership from Mr Big Atwatter. Panthers single handly took down Cedartown Rec football.

@ dogpound...i'm repeating what i heard...from several people associated with the programs of past when this cobert fellow ran it. but they may be embellishing, too...i don;t know.

since this topic has been posted and others have spoken it seems hard to argue with all the winning that happened (at the high school level from the kids developed in the rec league at that time) and the number of kids enrolled in the rec league's 'total' athletic programs at that time (football, baseball, soccer, cheerleading, basketbALL, etc.). from what the locals say now, compared to then, the number of kids has declined, rather than increased...i may be wrong....just repeating what i've heard.

Its sad to go down there and see so few kids. Its not all on the league or who is the Rec director, alot has to do with parents taking the time to get their children to practice and to get out and work with their children at home. Its to easy to get home from work and take it easy and let you kids stay on video games or out getting into some type trouble. Grab a glove and a ball and go spend sometime with your children.

It's really sad that the 9&under rec football team got all the way to state by CHEATING!! yes!!!

It's funny that the Rec football team made it to state w illegal players from the Panthers Team. By the time they got to state, they got found out and couldn't use the illegal players. And LOST MISERABLY!

By the way, the Rec Directors kid was on that team & benefited from illegal players until they got busted at state & couldn't use them.

The important thing is what's best for ALL of our youth in this area. What can we do to help, support or even change the future of the rec department?? It should be about the children and whats best for them.

indeed and well stated, tellthetruth.

the city (or is it county?) commissioners, if indeed they are in control of this department (the rec dept), should solicit the input of the high school 'head' coaches on what THEY (the coaches) reccommend as far as 'trickling-down' the philosohy and practice routines and game preparation to the rec dept director. the rec director should be RECEPTIVE to this input, and impart it to the individual coaches of the teams. when the kids get to middle and high school they are oriented to the fuindamentals of what they will encounter in high school.

in turn, there should be active and progressive SOLICITATION of advertisers and sponsors to fund the department (by the city/county, parents, volunteers). it is a known fact that well-funded programs, ALSO WITH ACTIVE solicitation/recruitment of enrollees (families & kids) are far more successful than volunteer leagues.

MOST IMPORTANT (my persoanl opinion here folks), is there should be a 'hardship' apparatus (process) to ALLOW those children whose families cannot afford some or all the fees, to participate. i dont know what the qualifications and criteria could be (to determine hardship status), how it would be managed to avoid abuse, but it should be there...period. there are too many good kids that go the wrong way when they have too much time on thier hands....active participation in sports salvages some of those folks to be tax-paying, hard-working citzens and contributors to our society....they should not have to live a life of poverty and degredation becuase their home environment couldn't (or didn't) have the tools and resources to support them in a simple season of athletics and go on to pursue what has become accpeted as the American Dream.

You all should see the code of conduct that Barrow gave to the Moms of the Girls Softball Players!

He basically told us that we are not to contact the City under any circumstances. So, he don't want to report to anyone but himself!

any manager of a department, group, company, etc., worth his or her salt, will accept the fact that if a situation is not resolved, or cannot be resolved by them, or beyonbd thier control or scope of responsibility, or the complaintant remains unsatisfied with a decision, that the matter can and should be kicked up the chain of command. that is how good organizations are run.

there should be greivance procedures in place...open and transparent.

the challenge has always been that some managers feel threatened by elevating a situation beyond their scope, and likewise, in this situation, for a parent or parents to go beyond the mangers head for fear of reprisal against their children. sadly enough, that is what happens sometimes.

I am a mother of 10 and under girl softball player. This has been the absolute worse year my daughter has ever had to endure playing with the rec department. Here it is Thursday evening and we have opening ceremonies on Saturday morning and we dont have uniforms or schedules. I was also told that we were going to have to play a 12 and under travel team when we have only a few girls that have ever played ball before. This is Ridiculious to say the least. I think the Rec director needs to get his head out of his butt and put the ideas he was presented in a portfolio by another more qualified person that applied for the director position.

Love it Star ! And Fed Up, I agree COMPLETELY! does he think we (Parents) are Ignorant? YESSSSSS!
He thinks it's more important to remodel his Office, which he was paid by the city to do himself....than to rebuild a Program that NO ONE HAS GAVE A CRAP ABOUT IN YEARS! DAVIS DIDNT, MORRIS & his band of THEIVES DIDNT! Who in the heck gave him that job?????? BARROW????? it's small town Politics!
YET ANOTHER FAILURE, by the CITY to Hire a COMPETANT DIRECTOR! bye bye foe good Cedartown Rec Sports!
Look on Iteams and ask around. Put your kids on teams elsewhere if possible! They shouldn't suffer for the llosses in Cedartown?

Great day at the Little League field! Record breaking crowd and teams! Looks like the new director is doing a better job than what people on here have been saying. Makes you think the complainers are not getting their way anymore. Good job to David and his two men crew!
