Dewey Decimal Plays Rough: Wis. woman booked over library fines

Nov 5, 2008 | Posted by: Dark_Island | Full story: www.msnbc.msn.com

GRAFTON, Wis. - A Grafton woman has been arrested and booked for failing to pay her library fines. Heidi Dalibor, 20, told the News Graphic in Cedarburg she ignored the library's calls and letters as well as a notice to appear in court.

[Check out her mug shot. Perhaps she's thinking of $$ coming her way instead of library fines. -ed.]

Funny how a free service can cause so much anguish. They went a little too far and I can't believe the judge ordered a warrant. It's a FREE service???!!!! Come on.

Jenny, she wasn't jailed because of her fines; she was jailed becaused she ignored a court summons. Anyone who ignores any type of a court summons is automatically jailed.

As a librarian, I feel, again, that I must set this straight. Libraries do not *want* to collect fines. It's a tedious process, involving a lot of paperwork, amounting to very little money in the end. What libraries *do* want is the return of the materials borrowed. Other people want to use those same materials, and it is an infringement of their right to use these materials when others don't return them on time. If someone needs to use the materials borrowed for longer than the loan period, the option is open to extend the loan by renewal. Most libraries will do renewals over the phone, so you don't even have to expend any effort there. In the end, this woman was either too lazy to attend to her responsibilies, or felt that the rules didn't apply to her. Whichever the case, she now has a criminal record, and this will affect her for the rest of her life.

Let us not forget that the books and services at the library belong to the taxpayers and the only people permitted to steal from the taxpayers are the politicians.

Problem is when idiots FREELY ABUSE the privileges and responsibilities of this service. In most States this abuse can be considered a crime, generally to that of "Conversion".

Your sadly mistaken that Politicians are exempt from the law. Granted, some don't get caught with their hand in the "cookie jar". But when they do, they pay the piper.

"Dewey Decimal Plays Rough: Wis. woman booked over library fines"

The title is wrong...the Dewey Decimal System is used by libraries to aid people to find specific titles. It's like saying, "Library overhead lighting plays rough..."

Stupid headlines...
