All these background checks! How far into your pasty do they dig? Im not a trouble maker, but had my share of troubles when I was a kid. Do they look into your juvie files or just 18 and up? Most of the things I had gotten in trouble for were 10 years or more ago and nothing serious, no felonies or theft or fraud. The worst things I got into trouble for was fighting and underage drinkin. I cant remember those dates tho its been a long time. I know ATnT and Sykes ask about even speeding tickets! Theres no way I can remember every traffic ticket I got in my life. Does Intouch do background checks to and how far do all these places dig and how much do little things long time ago matter?

I was hired at Sykes on the condition of the background check and didn't expect any problem. BUT, because I had a misdemeanor assault and battery from 10 years ago (I was only 19 and it was not as bad as it sounds), they withdrew the job offer. Now, I had fantastic recommendation letters from prior employers, I had a degree, and they had even been speaking about management opportunities... But one flaw from a decade ago prevented me from even working there.

Now, I know nothing about AT&T or Insight... I don't think any place can legally dig into your juvenile record. Those are supposed to be sealed when you reach 18.

Had you not told them about the misdemeanor before the background check? I wonder if it would make a difference if it were told up front. Did they give you a copy of the background check?

Well, to be completely honest, no, I didn't, but I wasn't trying to hide anything either. All apps I had ever seen before requested only felony information. So, because of that, I didn't even finish reading it (I take responsibility for that). I just checked "no" and went on. After I got the letter saying they were no longer interested in my services (yeah, not even a phone call), I called the lady and asked what I could do. I provided court documents, including witness testimonies and the police report-which was written by the officer on scene and stated I was the "victim" in the matter. She just dismissed it all and said she couldn't do anything. I came to find out later from the lady at the desk that I had scored higher on the computer exam than their current manager. I can't help but wonder if that had something to do with it.(That's speculation, of course.)

But anyway... It *might* have made a difference if I had said something up front, but I don't know. And, yes, I did receive a copy of the background check along with the letter that turned me down for the job.

No, I don't blame you, I would have done the same thing. I wouldn't expect they wouyld be interested in anything other than felonies, recent convictions or fraud/theft crimes. I probably won't even bother to apply at Sykes. Thanks for the info.

You're welcome. Of course, you could always call them anonymously and tell them what (if any) convictions you have and see what they say. I was told later that AT&T will overlook them if you tell them upfront... But at the same time, I know a lot of people losing their jobs there now (sending the jobs to India). From what I've heard on here, Insight is a pretty decent place to go. Less pay, but it's in town...

Good luck to you!

I know that you didnt mean to hide that from them but in their eyes they probably seen that as lying and trying to hide something on purpose. It sucks but they gotta look out for themselves.

You're probably right. They considered me a "liability" because of that. She (the HR lady-I don't remember her name now) wouldn't even take 15 minutes out of her day to speak to any or all of my previous employers about my temperament and work ethic.

In the end, it all worked out. I got a job that pays $5 more on the hour (with day hours, too). So, I'm glad it worked out like it did, but I couldn't help but be put off by the way the situation was handled.

I had a bad experience once with a applying at a retail job...It was holiday help several years ago and I had to take a drug test, otherwise they said I had the job. I thought it was no big deal since I never did drugs and rarely drank so I took the test and was very excited to start. Weeks went by and I didnt hear anything back so I called and they said they "lost' the test and that was it. Later I was told that is what they tell people that fail a drug test. The only thing I could think is that my mom bought a giant bag of poppy seed bagels from Sams club...Those can show up a false positive on a test if you eat enough of them lol.

That's messed up, they should have told you what had happened so you could explain it. If they had really lost the test, that was their own fault. Which retail store was that?

I had the samething happen to me.I past all the test and told I had the job.On the background check I checked no and signed papers agreed to check from 2006 to 2013.But they sent me a copy of background showing a mis charge from 2001 and that charge was dropped but still showed up.That was 12 yrs ago and they denied me the job over that.I dont think they really could go back that far since I signed for them to check 2006 to 2013 but they did, People make mistakes and change and being the fact from 2001 was all that showed show that.Had they had on the paper going back that far well I wouldve put that on there but it was nothing big and charge was dismissed but to late mothing I can do.The paper showed safe guard background check so I tried looking it up but you have to pay that company. You can go to the courthouse and ask them to tell you different ways of getting some charges off your record. It depends what and when the charges happened n pay a fee for it but if you want a job well thats your only chance and im going this week to see what they tell me.Sad part is if your a big criminal with felonies and just get out of prison or jail AGAIN well they help you get a job but someone who isn't dont stand achance.

At a bank. This applies to almost any bank. Local, good hours, benefits. Yeah, don't bother with these other places.

Will Sykes hire you if all you have is speeding and seat belt tickets on your record from years back that are already taken care of. Other than that I have nothing else on my record

Does anyone know how long it takes to get the results of the background check? I was hired and start the training next week... I had a felony but it was around 7 years ago... So I keep waiting for them to withdrawl the offer but it has been over a week now! I heard they notify you by mail... So I was just wondering if anyone has experienced this and how long it took them to notify you of withdrawing the offer! Thank you!

Unfortunately, I had a misdemeanor and was rejected. It was from 10 years prior. It took awhile. I'm afraid to say they probably will withdraw the offer. Unless you disclosed it to them first. Then they might allow it. I didn't because it was a misdemeanor and so long ago.
