Hope in sight for Cazenovia Lake cleanup
It's called Eurasian milfoil and while it may look harmless enough...the rapidly growing weed is slowly choking the life out of C azenovia L ake .

In light of the world wide "Green Movement" chemical herbicides should never be considered, especially with the lake being a source of potable water for its residents. There is proven facts of long term effects of herbicide use, of oxygen depletion which will dramatically reduce water quality. This lake will turn into pea soup like Lake Moraine did from heavy herbicide treatments over a period of years!!!

Dear Fellow Cazenovians;
My name is John Rybinski, I grew up in Cazenovia and still enjoy the lake that our community shares. I volunteer a lot of time to environmental and non for profit conservation type groups. Also I have been a New York State certified pesticide applicator.
In response to the Cazenovia Lake Associations plans to manage the Eurasian Milfoil with pesticides, I have some educated comments and facts that I would like to present. That I believe we need to get out to the public before it is too late and we end up sitting in a room down the road saying to each other “ why didn’t we know or think about this before hand?”
A fact is an endangered population, endemic solely to the Chittenango creek and falls, of snails exist and may be at risk. No mention or studies have been made and there is no way possible to know what the outcome will be if the chemical Triclopyr is applied upstream in Cazenovia lake.
Another well known fact is that triclopyr is highly toxic to some fish species, toxic to ducks, frogs and other wildlife. Some studies show that triclopyr will cause breast tumers, reproductive problems and birth defects in animals, humans are animals ! A study showed triclopyr residue in soil 477 days after treatment. Triclopyr was detected in runoff 9 months after application. Very small amounts of spray can injure some plants not targeted. Accumulates in fish tissue. Toxic to mammals and birds Concentrates in ovaries of laboratory animals. Increased thymus gland, liver and kidney degeneration from exposure. Eye and skin irritant. Produced toxic effects on pregnant rats and their fetus . Reports in human urine after exposure. Triclopyr can move through soil and contaminate ground water. Some inert ingredients may pose to be more harmful than active ingredient. Triclopyr is toxic to several water insects,“these are close to the beginning of the food chain”.
I have over the years as a pesticide applicator have noted that when pesticides are used in the short term you may accomplish a desired affect. But there is usually more than one undesirable tradeoff down the road. Most always there are non pesticide type approaches to any problem. In this case grass carp and mechanical removal and dredging.
As a person that likes to fish and is health conscience, I will no longer fish, swim or consume fish from Cazenovia lake and it’s direct watershed [ Chittenango Creek ] if direct pesticide applications are made. What is very sad is children may be the ones that suffer the most in the long run.
Interesting enough that the NYS and the NYSDEC are some of the worse managers in the northeast. Look at the way that the state manages it’s affairs and the DEC manages it’s renewable resources. Do I need to say more ? Why should we have any confidence that they will do better job with this project? It is my opinion that they have a ” I just want to see the problem go away attitude,” not what might be the best solution. Now is the time to STOP, THINK and find a better solution before we regret hasty ill fated decisions.
