Sylvan Beach Fireworks

Ithaca, NY

#1 Jul 13, 2009
I took the kids and one of their friends to the fireworks in Sylvan Beach for the 4th of July weekend. Good fireworks -- worth the 45 minute drive. However, attempting to get out of the parking lot is the story I have to rant about.
We parked for $5.00 and walked about six minutes -- good so far. We left after the fireworks and returned to the car....TWO HOURS LATER I was still sitting in my car in a line waiting to get out of the parking lot. TWO HOURS of not moving, and looking at the same SUV on the main street (Route 13? thru the village) for TWO HOURS. The kids in the car with me -- ages 11 to 15 -- all noted that the traffic on the main street was simply not moving -- FOR TWO HOURS. This is from a pack of experienced kid travelers -- to the state fairgrounds, to field days, to other fireworks shows in larger communities, to all sorts of places where you need to be patient as you drive out of the area. We all knew that something was very, very wrong with traffic flow and traffic control after the fireworks in SB.

It is not reasonable to have traffic at standstill that long. I saw no movement in the traffic for such a long period of time that I finally got out of my car and walked to the curb and looked north and south -- NOTHING MOVING as far as the eye could see going south, toward Rt. 31. However it eventually cleared up a bit going north, and we had to leave the parking lot line and squeeze between the first car at the parking lot exit (which was there forever trying to get out to drive south on Rt. 13) and the curb. NONE OF THE drivers ahead of us in that line in the parking lot would cooperate and back up enough to leave space for me and 3 other cars who decided to drive north instead of south. We all literally drove over the curb to get onto Rt 13 north and head the round way north to eventually loop back to Oneida, and from Oneida drive home to Fenner.

There was absolutely no excuse for this traffic back up. I've been to plenty of places far more crowded than Sylvan Beach was for the fireworks, with fewer roads, and traffic was slow -- BUT IT MOVED.

If this is typical for 4th of July weekend fireworks traffic in SB, while the fireworks were very good and the youngest kids loved them, the drive and and show is not worth it. Something needs to be done by local planners to prevent this from happening -- other communities have organized and effective "exit strategies" for huge special events crowds.

obviously this was your first time going because you would have known that this happens every year. the key is to leave before the fireworks end.

I have one suggestion. Don't go then. Maybe the police can give you an escort out of the beach since you are obviously so much better than anyone else. Why don't you just take your helicopter down. I mean your acting like a spoiled little princess and all princesses have helicopters.
