The Cave is right in the middle of town...next to the Big Baptist Church...It's called the Crystal River Cave Court...

The Entrance looks like something out of a Vampire Movie...not what you would expect in North Arkansas...

The source of the underground river has never been found...men have disapeared...there is said to be a triangle and an image of a cat, cut in the walls and floor, and a rock formation which looks something like a pulpit or thrown.

I believe the majic is strong, and it is much much older...back to the days of the ancient Mississippians(Mound Builders) who lived on this land for thousands of years, and then vanished!

The rocks themselves have a magic. Maybe why it seems like a haunted place? The Crystal River is underwater inner world of the indians afterlife.

There are stories of lights in the woods...and things being buried and then dug up under certain trees ... and a kind of local home grown vodoo...

Then again the whole place was settled by the Mason's...so why wouldn't it be alittle spooky!
Cheers-

I am a direct decendant of the city founders. My great grandparents Frank and Eliza J Brewer. My grand parents are Samuel and Cordia Johnson. My first job was giving guided tours in the cave at the age of 9. Your comments are not 100% correct.

Then add to it, the ruined state of it...look's like something from a horror movie, HUH?
It's a shame that it's in such a condition. I can barely remember when it was actually nice and not a roach motel! I wish they would reopen it for tours...I would love to go and take my son! Plus Cave City could really use the business!

But yeah, it is pretty spooky looking! Didn't they find some new species of frog or something in it one time. I remember there was an article about it hung up in the Sugar Shack a looong time ago...

The cave is in a sad state for sure .. it used to be beautiful from what my grandparents have said.

And I thought the "Big Baptist Church" turned out pretty great myself. At least they didn't make it overly ornate and gaudy like some I've seen! I haven't been inside but the outside seems tastefully done without being "flashy"

As for the cave itself, I think it could be a nice little tourist attraction with the right owner, but the current one living there will never sell.

An opinion of the building is yours to have ...

I don't see much merit in blaming the decline and possible destruction of the Cave Court area on a neighboring church. That is up to the owners and possibly the city if those owners don't care about it.

the church is awesome..the vents and everything give it a nice industrial touch....and the entrance has never been on Cave St...so why put it there...

Do I understand correctly that you can not visit the cave currently? If not does anybody remember the last time it was open?

Thanks

Better than a parking lot, lets put in a Trailer Park / Bible College...then you can feel like your still in Amarillo!
i'm not from Amarillo....and you're just mad because the church is growing in the community and decided to build a bigger building...

Here's a map of Cave City. The "Court" is located on the block between Cave St. and 230. It sits right on US 167.

http://www.mapquest.com/maps...

Crystal River Tourist Camp is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as being privately owned.

Hope this is some help!

Hubby and I have been visiting Cave City quite regularly since June (just bought property out past Evening Shade) and he has had a run-in with a "witch" at the Citgo. Just a warning! LOL

How many levels is the actualy cave supposed to be?
BEcause when I was in there, I could only go down a couple levels and then it was flooded, couldn't even get the stairs to reach the next level.
