I heard from a neighbor that after you request to speak at council meetings now, you are only allowed 3 minutes to speak. Is that true? When you have something important to bring before the council, what good is 3 minutes? Why would they require a 3 minute rule, unless they really don't want to hear anything brought foreward from the taxpayers. What happens if you take more than 3 minutes? Are we actually timed by a council member or po? Sounds to me like the city council is now infringing on our right to free speech and our right to air our grievances. New Madrid is owned by the people. Without the people, there would be no town or no revenue to support the town. Governments from local to federal are supposed to be government by the people for the people, not government by the councilmen and by the mayor and by the city administrator for the councilmen and for the mayor and for the city administrator. And the sad part is we the people are letting them get away with it.

does that apply to everybody who speaks to the City Council, or is that the rule for just us useless eaters? I will be on guard now waiting for the city to start charging us for the air we breathe. They might even start charging a poll tax to walk on the sidewalks. The bunch down there now has gone off the deep end. Since Jo(h)n Gilbert came to town, I have noticed our rights being steadily slipping away as far as the city council and city government is concerned; And he is continuously blowing money and government grants on frivilous projects the city can do without. The economy is on the road to recovery, but the majority of people in this town who are not on foodstamps are still struggling to eat; And struggling to pay our ever-rising electric bills. Rather than building unneccesary things, our taxdollars could be further used to pay our utility supplier and lower our electric bills. I am going to build huge solar panels, put them in my back yard, and watch my electric meter run backwards. Then the greedy suckers will owe me for putting power back into the electrical grid. The federal government is pushing for people to use solar power over using polluting coal. Do you think nm city council will come up with a new ordinance banning solar power? I remember years back when Bobby Daniels hooked up a generator to supply electricity to his home. The City made him take it down. Imagine that.

You are high. You can put up solar panels. You dont have to buy electricity from the city. You can hook up a generator and make your own power all you want. Go out there and buy you some. Its guna cost you a about 25000 to get started. You have to buy the equipment to phase your panels into the utility. You can go get a generator too. Desiel is 5 a gallon and a whole house generator will use about 5 gallons and hour. natural gas and propane is about the same price. You can get the generator installed for about 7000. You can do all of this legally. hell you can get a fuel cell which is probably the best route. Im guna tell you right now though, none of these options is cheaper except maybe the fuel cell, but a fuel cell is very very expenxive to install. Electricity costs what it costs. All the green alternatives sound great, but nothing comes close to being as cheap as coal fired plants. You are just greatly misinformed.

You're wrong, DUMMY! What makes you think I am high? Do you expect people to keep their heads in the sand so the city can keep sucking us all dry. And you are also wrong about the cost of solar panels. You can built your own quite large panel for under 300.00. And, you can attach it to batteries for power. The sun powers by day and battery power at night. But you are prolly right about the city charging a fortune for the equipment to hook up to the grid. But there are books available that instruct how to build and hook up homemade solar panels to the grid for free. Nice try though, putz. Also, Youtube has numerous videos that show how to build solar panels and how to hook them up. You just can't stand the thought of people being smarter than Gilbert.

they made that 3 minute rule because the alderman told me they call and discuss politics before the meeting so they have to act surprised. I think they should give 3 minute speech why we should vote for them?????terminate John. Sigh petition

I thought when people said they are leaving they usually hand over the keys do you all realize he is RE-writing a new manual policy for the city before he leaves? who is running this town, this "one" person or the city mayor and aldermans and city voters... Get him out he gave his resignation let him leave.... there are no laws for accepting his resignation and telling him goodbye.. plus are you now charging him for his electric......

Smart ass, you are the dummy. Go build a solar panel for 300 amd let me see it power your house. You are stupid. Your house runs on alternating current. Solar panels make direct current. You cant buy a power inveter large enough for 300. I am an electrician with 20 plus years of experience, you are an idiot that thinks everything you see on the internet is true. You have no clue what you are talking about. do you really think that if there was a way to supply your house with an unlimited supply of electricity, that everyone in the world would not be doing it. You just want to bitch about utilities rates that are some of the cheapest in the nation. Move to lilbourn, move anywhere supplied by Ameren or another privatly held utility and see how you like it. You have no idea how city government works either. There is the City of New Madrid and Municipal Light and Power. The city owns ML&P and because of the Hancock laws, the revenue generated by Ml&P cannot be used to fund City of New Madrid, and taxes raised by the City are not used toward ML&P. So all these projects you are bitching about in no way affect your utilitiy rates. See, i know this because i ask questions before i open my mouth. You live in a small town that like all small towns in america is slowly dying, and are scraping for every piece of something they can get. ML&P cannot control the rates they charge. They have to raise them when the Federal governmnet and AECI raise their rates. Rate studies are done to show how much they can raise them without overburdening the customer while at the same time continue to operate in budget. Let me tell you first hand that no municipal supplier would ever do anything to stop some one from using alternative power sources. You are just greatly missinformed on that subject. So my advice to you is put your money where your mouth is and build a solar panel for 300 bucks. Buy the batteries and power inverter and all the the stuff you need. I would tell you how to do it, but like you said, there is stuff on youtube. When you get it all done, i will come and kiss your ass in your front yard. Thats how confident i am in what i know, because you and the cats on youtube are idiots. For one thing, you always run off the batteries, the panels only charge them and you hope you have enough charge to last through the night. Know what your talking about before you speak. The reason there is a time limit at council meetings is because its annoying when idiots like you come in there and get on a soapbox and bitch about stuff that they are obviously ignorant about. Council meetings would look like an episode of Jerry Springer. Holler when you get your panels up gaytard

Is there a petition to sign? I would love to see him gone. Plus, all the others need to go too. New Madrid needs a change and new growth. Have you noticed that the population and decreased in the last couple of years? Tell me who has the petition!

It is fact they did all what was mentioned above. They hired new city administrator so thats 2 saleries they are dishing out. It's a crime what is going on. There is no accountability for the elected officials, they have zero responsibility. That is the problem you run into when you bring big city politics to a small town. The way it should work is each alderman is in charge of a certin department of the city and the administrator just over seas the operation and makes sure the city follow the budget set by the board of alderman not the other way around. Here in NM they have given 1 man total power and control and he is nothing but a selfish dictator. We dont even need a mayor or board of alderman thats a waste of time money and effort. Why should all the alderman get 1200 bonus at christmas which is more than what the city employees get. They dont get a christmas bonus. We did not vote our alderman in office to take our money for personell gain. Accountability is zero within our city government. You tell me what the fire chief does for almost 50k a year if you can tell me I will kiss your a**. He sure doesn't do no code enforcment. One of these days the voters will wake up and see what is going on and we will come togather as a community and vote the right people in and just maybe we will have some checks and balances. But until then NM will continue to die. The days of your last name meaning anything are over. It's time we are all created equal. Its time for the poor man to take over and do what is right.

I am so tired of people wanting to receive benefits from EVERY source. Try being a working wife and husband (yes we are married and don't live in sin so that we can draw welfare) who have pride in ourselves and want to teach our children the value of work. Since we both work we don't get food stamps, Medicaid, MC +, WIC, energy assisstant, housing assistance, etc. we have to buy our own health insurance because one of us is self employed and the other has insurance with no copay (3000 deductible) and it would cost too much to add dependents. We pay for our electricity, gas, trash, medical bills, food, and actually pay in taxes to the government every year! And you know what, we are proud to do so because this country was founded on hard work and somewhere along the way people forgot that and just want to bitch about how they are not getting something. Kiddos to the city administrator, mayor, aldermen, etc. you are doing a fine job. Oh and by the way, the givernment grants that have been received by our city have probably been very specific on what is to be done I.e., sidewalks, etc.

My wife and I too are hard working americans. I work 2 jobs and she works fulltime. We take care of our kids and provide for ourselfs byt if you think our city government is doing a good job your so living in denial or in the shadows or maybe you just abke to see what is going on or you do not care. I agree the grants aregreat and very welcomed but that is only a small part of the absolute caious that is going on down at city hall. It is time to clean up the mess and it is on us yes the voters shoulders.

You and those like you are the reason things continue as they are. I am sure the mayor, aldermen and Gilbert have done several fine things BUT the misinformation, and misuse of city funds continue. Yes they are specific but I know some of this specific money was diverted. Do the feds have someone who checks these things. No and those who abuse the system know this. Mr. Brown and Mr. Gilbert are not much different than dictators. Both are childish and very vengeful. Gilbert has no idea how to speak to people with out talking down to them. He has just not talked down to the right one as of yet. I am hoping he has that chance before he leaves but then he is not a complete idiot and is aware of who he can belittle and who he can't

I am in a wheelchair and I cannot get up to read it.... I know thats a Federal Fine...
