Do it the way they pick up kids in the private schools. If the teacher does not know you, the child does not leave. If it is an emergency, there is a long conversation and phone calls before that child goes anywhere. Once the bad guys know that, the problems is minimized. There is always the one that gets through the system.

They already check ID in BA so this wouldn't have happened. I am surprised that they don't already check in Tulsa.

Union checks ID for all visitors and folks who come to pick up kids. Has for several years. There is absolutely no excuse for TPS to be so far behind the times. RIDICULOUS and it's a HUGE potential liability for TPS if something bad would have happened to that child. Seriously - TPS does nothing to help their own bad reputation.

I agree with "Duh", my child attended Union in her elementary and Junior High years and they were strict on who, why, when and how she left during school hours.

Some responsibility should lie with the parent also, my daughter, her grandmother & grandfather & I had a secret code word that only we knew. If someone was to try and pick her up other than us 3 she knew to ask them that code word if they didnt have it she was to tell the school she was not leaving with them. She understood that this meant ANYONE that didn't have the code word.

TPS should definately put something definitative in place right now!

I have had a child in the same elementary school for the past 10 years. They know me, but ask my brother and sister in law for their IDs when they have to pick up one of my girls. The high school my oldest goes to asked me for my ID, kept it, gave me a visitor pass, and returned my ID when I left. I had to sign in as well. All schools need to do what that high school is doing. I do sign my name at the elementary school when I am there, even if I am not picking up one of my girls, I may be just dropping off papers or picking some up. ALL VISITORS should sign in and out of the school, no matter what the nature of Business they are there for.

What really annoys me about this whole ting is that, according to the radio this morning, the little girl told the teach (school person) that the person trying to pick her up was not her dad..

That in itself should have caused alarm bells to ring.. little kids are a very good barameter for knowing when something doesnt pass the smell test.. and if a kid is telling them that that person isnt who they say they are, they need to call to popo....

For christ sake people.. do a better job of protecting our children.. yet another reason not to send our son to TPS when he is old enough..

This should have been a no brainer for TPS. The problem is their employees aren't much smarter than the kids.

I'm gonna throw out my disclaimer: NOTHING AGAINST NORTH TULSA, BUT I could maybe understand this a little better if it was a smal rual school...but it wasn't! It was a North Tulsa school! No ID? No asking the child if they feel safe to leave with this person? Most of all teh ID! If I was that little girls mother HEADS. WOULD. ROLL.

HEL-lo! No-brainer here! Did we just all assume that TPS had this basic safety measure in place and in practice??? In Broken Arrow, it is actually USED and has been for many years! When I picked up my granddaughter from elementary school, I had to show a picture ID and sign my name...and I went to high school with the principal...!!

They should double-check anyone that appears to be in this country illegally and/or appears to be an atheist! I'm sure this would reduce this sort of thing by at least 90%.

I don't remember which school it is, but I know I have heard of an ID card being given to the parents or persons able to pick the child up. The doors were locked to outside visitors (students and faculty could leave, but unless someone floated in, they couldn't get in) and access was only allowed to the card holder. Once inside they had to have their DL or state issued ID card to verify information and still had to go through more information in order to prove who they were. Granted that it wouldn't stop it all but it could help stop most of it if ALL the schools went to something like this. It is sad that we have had to turn our schools into prisons for children, I remember being able to go out at lunch to the playground when I was younger. We could run around and not worry about anything. Even in high school we were allowed to go off campus to drive somewhere for lunch. It's getting crazy and all alternatives should be looked at to keep the kids safe.

It's interesting that no one is willing to acknowledge that the mother who I guess had legal custody of the kid, didn't bother to update the list of individuals who could pick up the kid.

If the mother had taken the time to do the responsible thing and simply update the "pick-up list",this wouldn't have happened.

PARENTAL RESPONSIBLILITY!!!

My childrens' school knows me but if anyone else comes to pick up the kids they must be on the approved list and show ID. At least that is what is SUPPOSED to happen.

I think it is obvious if a kid comes into the office for early dismissal and says "grandpa" as they run over for a hug. But I would still like to know that the office employees are actually doing their JOB by following procedure rules.
