When a train and any car or truck play tag , they will always loose . Drivers need to wait, the gamble isn't worth it ! Now the news media most of the time plays up the driver or occupants of the car and the impact on them and their families . A locomotive engineer is doing all he can to stop and there is no steering wheel to turn and dodge . Worst part is he has a front row seat to watch it all happen . What about the impact the wreck has on him ? We don't hear about that !

Trains never lose. It blows my mind how many people a year are hit by trains.

There is a series of tracks with not even signals on NE 4th near Sunnylane. I always stop and look to see if trains are coming. Usually a RR person will be out by the tracks checking to see if traffic is aware the train is jacking around, stopping, backing up, or just sitting there, but not always. And I agree, that one should never, EVER try and cross the tracks when it is obvious a train is coming, signal, arms, or not.

Agreed. It seems this is the case in a lot of rural settings. A lot of people are already jumping to the conclusion that the driver here was racing the train. A possibility, but perhaps not necessarily the case here. I cannot tell much from the photo posted. However, I can see that from where the final stop appears to have been, the train was coming around a curve, and there are a lot of trees seen in the background. It is entirely possible that the view of the approaching train may well have been obstructed. I imagine it is very noisy in the driver's cab, which may drown out the horn of an approaching train - if it even sounded at all. The driver is fortunate to have escaped unharmed.
When I was a child, I grew up in a rural setting. We frequently encountered a particular crossing, almost anytime we went anywhere. There were signs, but no lights or crossing arms. There was very tall grass on either side of the track, and the crossing was a very short distance from the peak of a hill. We did have a close call once. My mother did look both ways, as she was in the habit of doing; but just as we were crossing, here came the train over the hill, bearing down on us. Pretty scary. The train whistle had not even sounded, until (I suspect) the crossing became visible to the engineer. This incident was over 20 years ago, and the location still remains one of the more dangerous railroad crossings.
