Turn off the web cam software kids. Remove the drivers. Principals have already been busted around the nation for snooping after school hours. Big brother is watching. Enjoy.

"Each computer is wired for the Internet, but has filters blocking certain sites and each one has a web cam but school officials cannot activate the cameras."

"The laptops come courtesy of a $719,000 grant in stimulus money given to the Oklahoma Department of Education."

So while some kids don't even have basic school suplies, the Oklahoma DOE decides to buy laptops for other kids???

Stupid, Stupid, Stupid. A huge waste of taxpayer money.

I can understand that the money was spent on the laptops, what I dont understand is why was it spent on mac books? If you want to prepare these children for college or the work place then give them something that most colleges and workplaces use ie; Windows based pc's. I know that windows is far from perfect but its what most of them use. The money could have been spent on relatively cheap netbooks that can do everything that these children need to learn and save money in the process.

This is an absolute waste of money. They don't need laptops -- most kids don't need them until college and these will be obsolete by then. This is taxpayer money -- my money -- and I want it back!

Wow! You people are so jealous. It's really funny that when kids get the opportunity to get ahead people will complain about it.

They say they cannot access the cameras but I do not believe them ... Kids, close the laptops before doing anything in your rooms ie; undressing etc ...
And I think it is wonderful that they did this for the children. There are so many families out there that cannot afford a computer for their kids to use ...

The grant money had to be spent on one to one learning technology initiatives. Any school in Oklahoma could have applied. More than 80 did, actually.

The IT department chose the Macs. According to the Ms. Parrish, the principal, Easier to integrate, easier to manage the backend, no additional software or licenses to buy in order for the kids to be ready to learn / execute right away, and fewer viruses to defend against.

I am One of those parents that their CHILD has one of these computers, I Personally think this is a BIG HUGE Mistake, 6th Graders Cant take there's home!Very Good, Smart thinking! 7th and 8th Can take there's home! Very Bad!
But most of all of my thoughts about all of this , Is this, WHY ON EARTH, 6th - 7th- and 8th Grades. If anything, the High School students Should have gotten them, Not these Youngsters.
These kids still need to LEARN how to do their Penmanship, with WRIGHTING SKILLS, Pen - Paper, that sort of thing.
Where as the Older Students, could have gotten a better hold, and gone further, faster with this computer, than the younger ones. And also some one said they could have gotten better ones with windows, their right, And as Far as Accessing the Cam, Well, they Sure can, If they wanted to, I Have Tape over my kids Cam as soon as They walk through the Door of the house. Technology is Sooooo Great these days, I DON'T TRUST ANYONE - ANYMORE!
This was truly a waist of money, and their going to waist Our kids School time trying to teach them the operations of the computer, VS , Teaching regular school work. I dare say Should Any of these kids were to go to another school next year, that didn't have Computers, they would go back into the grade they were in this year, due to the fact, they have spent to much time computing, than Schooling.
This was a Bad mistake, We Have had a Computer here in my home since 2000, anyone that has a computer, Knowes, that an Awful lot of time is spent on these computers, even learning to make their ways around them, and learn the basics of them. If any thing the High School Should have gotten them, But does the School Ask Parents, before leaping into such a venture, Noooooooo!
They Only include us when They Want to.
My Kids High School And Jr High, Could have used our computer any time with their home work, Very little did they do that, All in all they don it through the Books that was for them to learn.
What Next Replacing teachers with Screen teachers, Now there's a way to cut coast, And OMG Should a Student get out of Hand, Why just put a Camera over head to watch the goings on, and Just Zap that student back into reality, that They are there to learn Not fool around, Watch out Teachers, hahah, Your Job Just might really be on the line.
Isn't Technology Just Sooooo Great!!!!

Do you have any kids? Any 6th graders? Would you spend $2200 to buy them a laptop to use? Have you ever taught 6th grade? If so, did all of your students get to class with their textbooks without misplacing them? Last my daughter was in public school, her teacher wouldn't even let 7th graders bring home text books because most of the kids wouldn't get back to school with them. Jealousy has nothing to do with my comments -- it's just from "been there, done that." I would not have considered buying a Mac laptop for my 6th grader -- in fact, he didn't have one until he was a senior in high school and preparing for college -- he had absolutely no legitimate need for it. Kids aren't even learning the basics, so why don't we try teaching that first and leave the internet researching to library computers where teachers can oversee it?
