It would be lovely if the state could find in its heart and pocketbook a way to take care of the disabled while developing the land in a way that satisfies the community.
What's going on stinks. It's heavy handed treatment of vulnerable residents while ignoring what the community wants.

I would like toI am the adoptive parent of a 38 year old very severely disabled, medically involved man who was previously a resident of Rosewood. Our son has lived in our in our home and has been a participating member of our community for more than 30 years.
The biggest obstacle that we face in trying to keep our son involved in the community is finding adequate funding for programs, community activities and appropriate living wages for care-givers.
see funds that are generated by the sales and/or lease of lands previously designated for such institutions used for programs and services for populations once served by institutions. Closing those warehouses also saves the state a lot of money that rightfully should be directed toward higher quality community support and toward serving the THOUSANDS of people who are waiting for services.
Our state should be ASHAMED to have ANY of these most fragile and vulnerable people waiting for services. Our society is advanced and wealthy (even in this economy) enough to meet the needs of those who are not able to be independent. It is just a matter of priorities... and morals. Funding persons on that long waiting list is just the right thing to do with monies saved and/or earned by closing institutions and distributing the vacant land and buildings.

Pamela, the operative word in your post is morals. Largely, this is a case of morals. And if you're waiting on morals in this world, you will have a long wait, indeed.
