Maybe the feds should withhold all financial subsidies and research grants to UMBC if the school fears being "militarized." Sounds like another group of 60's leftovers who never grew up.

I went to college on an AFROTC scholarship. I am glad I had that choice. I never forced anybody else to do anything related to my participation in AFROTC, except see me wear my uniform once or twice a week.

Freedom of expression includes participating in ROTC and proudly wearing the uniform.

I am a Ph.D. student at UMBC and am embarassed by the faculty for protesting the ROTC. ROTC is such a positive program for so many. It paid for my husband to get an education and to become an officer in the Air Force. It did not "militarize" him or anyone else and no one was forced to be commissioned if after trying ROTC, they did not like it. Desiring to serve your country and get a leg up on officership is not a bad thing. Their arguments are really week, and they should think of all the students who use ROTC as an opportunity get out of poor conditions. They're really hurting all of them while pushing their own political agendas. Maybe I need to switch schools if this is the attitude.

These folks are concerned about the "militarization" of the campus but not the "liberal-ization" of the campus? Who protects their right to express their speech? The same military they don't want on campus. More self-righteous, holier-than-thou nonsense from another center of higher learning.

Come on people, wake up! The military (throughout this nationís short history) has allowed us in this country to maintain freedoms that we take for granted everyday. One of those freedoms that I am sure most do not think of is the opportunity to gain a higher education. Those that disagree with that statement need to leave their little bubble, pack a bag, and get their shoes dirty visiting and educating themselves on some of the places in this world where these opportunities that we have here in the U.S. are not a possibility. Yes, these places includes Iraq, Afghanistan and many other lovely places where some (not all) would like to kill you just because you are a Westerner and/or an American even if you do not support President Bush and the war. There are many out there in this world that would love to take away our freedoms that we enjoy, which yes, include the opportunity to get a higher education. Do I need to remind some of you that there are places in this world, where governments do not support all individuals (especially women) the opportunity to receive an education. That is the way that many governments and regimes control the thought and knowledge process of its citizens. Many of those individuals and organizations in this world would love to take that and many other freedoms away from us. Think about that for a minute. If those, who just don't get it, keep convincing others to support their side of this argument - we may just get the opportunity to live such a nightmare. That is not such a far-fetched possibility as many might think. If that ever happens, I am sure those who would lead us down this road would be the first to standup and do something about it. Right! People, wake up!
So those ďleadersĒ at UMBC need to think about the bigger picture before making a hasty decision on banning ROTC from its campus. Looking beyond the ďtunnel visionĒ and view the bigger picture - despite if you are for or against the current President and/or the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, ROTC not only provides an opportunity/option for some to get an higher education, but more importantly ROTC develops and provides potential leaders to our community as well as leaders to deal with future global issues beyond Iraq and Afghanistan (yes, those will go away one day).
As a member of the Catonsville community as well as a military member and a war veteran, banning ROTC from a campus would not only be a mistake for this community in my opinion, but it would display disrespect to me (though I will get over it) but more importantly, it would probably be a slap in the face to many of those (to include the families left behind) who gave their lives to provide you the opportunity to enjoy the freedoms you do. Think about that for minute. Most Americans are separated from the realities of war. So put yourself in the shoes of those and their families that deal with war on a daily basis. Those at UMBC (students & faculty) that support the creation of ROTC (or just against the banning of ROTC) on campus need to standup and make your voice heard as well. The decision made by the others on campus will more than likely represent the way others view the UMBC community.
ROTC provides more than warriors; it provides leaders outside military service. In this complicated world we live in today quality and experienced leaders at all levels of community service as well as business are in short supply. UMBC, please take this issue/discussion seriously, and donít just react to those with the louder voice. This is an opportunity for UMBC to be a leader in one way or the other on an issue that is facing other college communities around this nation.

There is also a lot of support from students as well. A facebook group in support of ROTC at UMBC already has nearly 100 members. And unlike the online petition (which has many 'anonymous' and 'Heywood Jablowme' type names), everyone in the Pro-ROTC facebook group is actually a real person, and not the same handful of bitter faculty members voting over and over again.

I think it's funny how these recruitment protesters never think of the right of the recruits to voluntarily join the military. I find these people usually have huge miconceptions about military life and the military in general, and this often spawns fear and distrust of the military. It's sad how many people this applies to.

ROTC is nothing more than brainwashing young people to maintain the belief that we need war and need to feed the war machine. I thought we in MD were smarter than that. Good God!

We DO NOT have military for protection and freedom. We have it to set the standard for bullying other nations. We have been doing this for as long as we have been here, since stealing this from the Native people of which I am one. Yes, my family was here first so my opinion REALLY matters. I wonder how many of you were rooting for the south during the civil war?

No one owes ROTC for their college education. Your taxes paid for that or are you not versed enough in your own country's ways to know this?

We bully and bully and we have the WOMDs in OUR backyard (Los Alamos, NM) and then we wonder why "the chickens come home to roost" (911) and other nations despise us. To think for one minute that we benefit from this is so unintelligent, its unreal.

So go live in Iraq, you say. I have- and I have seen what freedom loving Americans have done there. I wish I had never been born here. This is embarrassing! I'm telling everyone I'm Canadian from now on. Have some sense and some class- please.

You like war because it makes you feel justified in hating and you hate because you have such misery in your own lives. I bet you spend a lot on your own comfort yet give little to those in need. Very Christian of you. I bet you think dark skinned people are somehow less than you. Shame on you. WHO WOULD JEUS BOMB. No one. No one. And He came from the land of the so-called terrorists.

I can not believe your ignorance. Hippies have nothing to do with this issue. Where have you been? Do you know how many thousands of clergy want to see ROTC go away? Hippies?-- obviously. Get informed before you start ranting on the Limbaugh side of things because you sound very silly.

Shame on all of you- obviously brainwashed if you are belittling anyone who would speak for peace. Oh well, there goes any hope for the human race if you think the military is going to HELP us. Gee. Yes, lets have Hiroshima again, pleaseÖ

Jesus Christ has been proven by all theologians to have been 100% non-violent. If you call yourselves Christian than shame shame shame on you for backing the war machine. If you stop confusing flag-waving righteousness with God maybe youíd see that to support ROTC is to enable a system that only wants war- and all war accomplishes is the killing of our fellow humans. Never, never kill. The so-called freedoms you have been brainwashed to believe the military provides will never be as valuable as nonviolence. Conjure up a few brain cells and Google the SOA and SOAW to see how we train terrorists so that we can have terrorists to go and attack. And hey, donít forget that your taxes pay for that. God in heaven, what is wrong with you people? Whose ass is your head up?

Iím a rather small female yet I have the guts to stand up for human rights. DO YOU? Have the BALLS to take blows from others and have the BALLS to die as Gandhi did for the cause of NONVIOLENCE. Joining the military is not balls. Refusing to strike a blow is. I doubt any of you have that kind of courage. Shame!

What in the world is wrong with you people? I canít believe I live in MD. Iím moving! Yikes- are you all republicans? I figured since we were the wealthiest state in the nation we might be the smartest. Apparently not.

PEACE AND NONVIOLENCE AT ANY COST but never through war or violence. You can not get peace by making war and ROTC is training for war- plain and simple. You can not subtract the military from war, guns, and violence and anyone who thinks they can belongs in Candyland.

Get OVER this military thing already. Get over it. Love your enemies if you have the personal courage to do so because blessed are the peacemakers- they shall be called sons and daughters of God.

God help you.

To all of those self rightious people who forgot to actually read the Gospels:

Quoting the Gospel of Luke, Jesus said:

12:49"I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is completed! 51Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."
