Why is there no bootlegging and gambling discussions in the city...as a success story.Almost sixty years of continuous violations of KRS 242.230.Still going strong, very successful.

One of the very few businesses left in the city; going strong and unempeded by hard times, the law, and are recession proof. Police supported, court protected and voter resistant.

Cash-wise,They are the most successful privately owned business in the city.Investment and inventory, to cash received, they are the best.

It appears to me the city should applaud their sucess and publicly award them a "business of the century" plaque in greatful recognition of their magnificant ability to succeed in good times and bad, when an organization and the city government work hand in hand to benefit the entire community.

Would it not be even more worthwhile for the Boyd County Judge-Executive and the County Commission to emulate Catlettsburg's forward lead and do the same to the benefit of us all?

Think on it. Bootlegging, gambling and bookmaking for all of the county...all citizen approved! One could opine even the courts would look favorably on such a novel approach toward new businesses.

Mr.Gate City Burgoo Jobe is just upset that he is not able to bootleg and make $ off tips, cause he tried everything in the world to keep it open.Remember when he tried the private locker club crap?Bring your own booze, keep it locked in a locker,or your beer cold in his cooler for you,and he would charge you for ice and glasses, etc.,but he wasn't selling any booze now was he.How dare you talk about a cop being a member of the Elks ,when Jim Payne layed drunk outta his mind at your place, using intimidation on you and bugging the shit outta everyone else, then get in his car and drive.Sound familiar?Everyone knows your game.Wasted a shitload of money on those windshield flyers too.Just Face it,Nobdy likes you,get over it and quit grinding your axe, you're making yourself look foolish.Everyone knows about "the upper room",alcohol officers included. This is not The National Enquirer with breaking news.Go grow old and leave everyone alone.

People in Cburg is blindsighted by the fact that there is a guy who makes money off the bootlegging and gambling that goes on. But the simple fact is that no one will ever be able to prove it, look at the money that the city has reported a loss for the last two years lol. Its obvious that there is something going on.

The only problem I have with the Elks or any other place where there people drink is that the police know it happens (right beside them) on a daily basis and they will give out DUI's like candy to other people but nobody who goes there? I mean at least be fair about it.

John Elza Workman was a WW11 Vet, a friend to many people, including me. He was very helpful to many in need. He was also a bootlegger (where the present "Inn"is.

His lovely wife,Helen, was a very sweet person; very kind, educated, attractive and extremely well mannered. A first rate lady.

John's very best friend was also a former WW11 vet, Chief of Police Ray Castle, who retired in 1988.

From 1953 until his retirement in 1988, Ray was every Mayor's and Council's emissary to the bootleggers. Later it was Tommy and now Mark; each in turn had/has each and every mayor and council blessings for his enforcement, collecting any and all currencies, votes and thank you's via each and every bootlegger and gambler in the city.

And so it is with today's Mayor and Council, not one change in procedure or purpose, except the town of 5,000 is now 1700, due in great measure to all previous mayors and councils. And, yes, I knew and liked John Elza...and called him friend.

Mr.Are now, or wannabe, an Upstairs member. You are so ignorant of the facts in so many areas, and are only a gullible believer in whatever you are told. Comments usually have a significant degree of facts when uttered by someone with knowledge. Sadly, your comments are lacking such.

The five Executive Officers of Post 224 voted 5 to 0 to close the clubroom activities, because we were short on knowledgeable personnel to do bingo two days a week and operate the club room. The 224 membership at a regulal meeting approved the same.

And, you should remember one other small item of fact; The Boyd County Athletic Association is a non profit organization, incorporated under the laws of the Commonwealth in 1983,and totally unrelated to American Legion Post 224, which was incorporated under the laws of the Commonwealth in 1977, receiving its charter by an act of Congress, and was first organized in Paris,France and held its First Convention after WW1,in Chicago in 1919.Note: Just a few facts to consider, before you, again, speak of what you know not.

The Boyd County Athletic Association Inc. Held, supervised and operated the 224 Bingo. The Legion Post was not involved in any way with the bingo game, except for being helpful in many ways in our association with American Legion Baseball. By the way, 224 Legion Baseball did win the State Championship in 1988.

It was appreciated and enjoyed when the National Organization picked up the tab and flew a large jet into Kenova Airport and flew the team, the coaches, the managers etc. to Memphis to play in the Nationals, from the entire United States' Posts. The first class hotels in Memphis, the AC Greyhounds to and from practice twice a day, free meals etc., and return trip to Kenova airport was also a great treat for all of our young (ages 16 to 19)players and their families. All on the tab of American Legion Headquarters in Minneapolis.

Everyone knows Post 224 did the same thing. They just couldn't police their own and they got shut down. Mr. Jobe has been bitter ever since.

You voted to close the clubroom? The same clubroom that bootlegging and tip pulling was happening? The same stuff you are bitching about at the Elks?Hypocritic isn't it? Sponsoring a ball team and your proper use of the english language doesn't make a difference old man. I was a member of 224 and still a member of the legion and "the upper room".Give it a rest.No matter what, you were doing the same thing.

If you were a member of Post 224, you were not much of a member,or you would have attended the meeting wherein the Oficers Report was read to the membership, and the membership approved by vote the report, effectively closing the the clubroom...your ignorance of our Charitable Gaming License #0013 licensed the Post for any and all manner of tips. A quarterly report and tax on the receipts were duly transmitted to the Charitable Gaming Commission at Frankfort, which operates as a part of the Justice Department.

Your memory is great...and even greater for the things you cannot or choose "not" to remember. The "bottle club" was approved by Statute, also by Frankfort.

Gurney and his hired clowns cooked up the raid at Punkins with Colonel,George and Renda.(If you know anything at all, you know that.) If not, then you do not know much...as you so adroitly proved more than once in your mouthings. Marco, Dino, and Mr.Wechsler found nothing, and left empty-handed. Ask Dino...the only one there now that knows and will tell the truth. Now, shoo!
