I was there on the scene a minute after the accident before rescue crew arrived. He was still alive when I got there. He hung on a minute or 2.
He had a massive chest wound.

I was wondering why traffic on Braddock was so bad. I'm so sorry to hear about this. 50 is such a hazard with all the huge trucks all the time. It is so sad that he died. You'd almost think that the semi/garbage truck would be about the same size that you'd hope everyone would make it out ok (as compared to a semi and a compact car for example). But I am sorry to hear it was not the case in this situation.

The trash truck had no hood or engine in the front - the driver is up by the big, flat glass front. The glass was totally gone. Basically, it appeared the back of the trailer went through the windshield and hit him directly in the chest.

I didn't see the accident happen, but was there less than a minute after it happened. I held his hand before he died.

FFrocco - I passed by shortly afterwards when he was still in the truck and uncovered and could tell he had passed. It was so sad but am relieved to know that you were there for him. Thank you.

That's horrible. Sounds like the driver didn't stop in time to not hit the semi. Trash trucks have so much momentum it takes a while to stop. Wonder if the semi stopped suddenly, too. Traffic on 50 can be that way--sudden stopping. Good for you FFrocco for being there for him. I hope you aren't haunted by the memories or nightmares or anything like that. What a good Samaritan thing to do. I'm sure his family appreciates the fact he didn't die alone. Hugs are deserved all the way around.

No sudden stopping by the pulled out onto 50 on a red and the trash truck didn't have enough time to slow down before hitting into the back of the truck. I was sitting at the light taking a left onto 50 from Stonecroft and saw the whole thing. It was awful.

FFrocco - thanks for the posts and updates. I, too was there on the scene moments after it happened and have had a hard time getting it out my mind. I pass that route at least twice everyday (live in S Riding). Makes you realize how precious life is and how quickly it can be taken away. That night I said a prayer and gave an extra hug to my wife and son. Best to his loved ones..and thanks again for your actions.
