Federal probe cites pilot error in February crash

By Curt Brown

NEW BEDFORD A federal probe into the Feb. 2 plane crash that claimed the lives of three people has found several incidences of pilot error and has determined the probable cause for the accident was the inability to maintain the aircraft during a missed approach to the New Bedford Regional Airport. The findings are contained in the National Transportation Safety Board's final report, issued Dec. 20, on the crash that claimed the lives of Peter J. Karoly, 53, of Bethlehem, Pa., a medical malpractice lawyer; his wife, Dr. Lauren Angstadt, 54, an endodontist; and a commercial pilot, Michael Milot, 23, of Germanville, Pa. The report says that both Mr. Karoly and Mr. Milot had the qualifications to fly the plane a Socata TBM 700 single-engine turboprop but federal officials could not determine which was operating the aircraft at the time of the crash. Mr. Milot had a commercial pilot certificate and Mr. Karoly held a private pilot certificate and was the owner of the plane.

Pilot error? Negligence is a more fitting term. What about the poor landownwer where Karoly carelessly crashed his plane and killed two others? Who will be responsible for their emotional pain and suffering. Doubt one will be filed on there behalf or by Mikes family, but it sure would be nice to see a multi-million dollar lawsuit against his estate.

Earlier, I wrote I am tired of hearing about Peter Karoly and Lauren Angstadt. What about my wonderful son, Michael J Milot Sr.???He was killed too ! Every one seems to forget him, but I know I will never forget the BEST SON that a Mom and Dad could ever possibly dream of having. He was taken away from his family, his wife to be, and he has a 3 month old son, he never even knew he was going to be a Father. How tragic is that??? Mike's Baby carries his name on and looks just like our Michael. Michael J. Milot Sr. was a fantastic pilot like the report said!

Mrs. Milot, my heart goes out to you and your family. It was a tragedy and you will have to face that for the rest of your life and that's just sad. Your son will live on in the memories you have and those memories will be passed along to his son I'm sure. May he rest in peace and may God give you comfort.

It is unfortunate that almost every article written has a comment from John Karoly about his
upcoming lawsuit, as if that is the only thing
of importance. Lives were lost...Michael Milot
was a wonderful person, son, brother & friend.
It would be fitting that Michael be mentioned
in context to his life and how his many accomplishments remains with us; how many lives
he touched as a result of those accomlishments.

Mrs. Milot,
I am so sorry for your loss. Unfortunatly, the newspapers only pick up on the people who are always in the news. In this case, the Karoly's.
I will not pretend to know your pain. I have lost a parent but not a child.
You, your family and Mike will be in my prayers.

Mr. Milot, i am sorry about your son. I don't think that it was pilot error that killed Lauren, Peter, and Michael. I think there were a lot of other things that came into play. The NTSB is just trying to clean up their own mess, and easily label the accident as pilot error when in reality it is much much more than that. My prayers are with you

Michael was my younger brother and my only sibling, and losing him was like losing half of me. My brother's tragic death has forever changed my life, and there are many days that it's difficult for me to even get out of bed and move on. There are so many things that my brother is going to miss, including the life of his first and only child, Michael, Jr. My brother loved to drive, and he's going to miss every "new and exciting" car that comes out each year. Mike loved music, and every new song I hear, I only wish I could ask him if he liked it too. I'm sure he'd say, "I already have it on CD, Sis." Almost a year has passed since my brother died, and I still have not accepted it and don't know if I ever will - sometimes it's like a shock all over again. I want everyone out there to know that my brother was an honest, loving, quiet and content family man who had no enemies and only thousands who loved him. It would be nice to have this local newspaper that I have been reading my entire life focus more on the wonderful life of my brother and those who miss him dearly! I love you forever Mike! Love, Sis
