Local shelter was lax regarding 'Tiger Ranch'

Full story: The Morning Call

Regarding the March 17 article, ''SPCA seeks donations for cats rescued in raid'': I read with dismay, but not surprise, that the authorities had finally caught on to what was possibly going on at Tiger Ranch.

I have 7 cats of my own and just don't know how someone could do this!!!! They are a part of my family, not just an animal!!!!! I know when my cats are sick, so what do you do with them? TAKE THEM TO THE VET!!!!! What she did was wrong!! I am going to the Clarion shelter this weekend to give them some of the items they need!! I would like to know why she kept the dead cats in freezers? Yeah its winter, but what does that got to do with it!!! That would not stop me from burying them!!! That is just sick!!!!!!!! If you can't take care of them, don't take them in!!! This is why they should be fixed, before they start having all these kittens that no one wants!!!

Good for you to want to help!!

What I don't understand about the cats in the freezers is this...If she had all this vet care for the cats, then why didn't she have them cremated? I'm sure a vet would have cut costs for her considering all the dead one's she had. I mean, she's claiming they were all under vet care right? The vet should have known how sick the cats were if there were THAT many cats in the freezer plus ones dying in rooms!

Ok, gloves off. How many healthy adoptable cats were KILLED at The Center for Animal Health & Welfare (formerly Northampton County SPCA)? Tell me how many. It doesn't sound like you have ANY idea how many cats were taken to Tiger Ranch. Probably should check your facts. I've been to Tiger Ranch several times during the summer of 2007. Did the cats live in the lap of luxury? No, but they LIVE which they wouldn't had other shelters not brought the cats to Tiger Ranch. Tiger Ranch had a full inspection in July, 2006 and again in 10/07. This was purely a witch hunt on the part of one woman, Debbie.Shame shame on her. The solution in this country is to KILL healthy adoptable cats. It's done every day somewhere in this country. Lin has the right concept, spay and neuter, manage. She's got the best heart. I wish her the best.
The following comment was posted on Feral Cat News by another witness to the conditions at Tiger Ranch:

ďThe comments made to the media by Chris DeRose and his California group are highly questionable to anyone who actually lives here and witnessed the conditions at Tiger Ranch. I visited Tiger Ranch years ago, and was so stunned by what I saw that I reported it immediately to several authorities. I saw dead and dying cats, sick cats everywhere, filthy feces- smeared conditions, cats coughing up hunks of mucus sharing a bowl of congealed food with countless others. The water bowls and litter pans in the cages looked like they hadnít been cleaned for weeks. There were dead bodies in the litter pans. It was a total dump with little plywood shacks filled with dying cats, and the entire property had a bad smell.

I have never forgotten the horror of Tiger Ranch, and have tried repeatedly to get help for the cats, but all the humane officers I contacted did nothing. Over the years I have met many others who witnessed the same conditions and also reported Tiger Ranch. In fact, itís been a topic of discussion in Southwestern Pennsylvania for years why no one would shut down Tiger Ranch when so many people complained about it. Clearly those same conditions existed when the PA SPCA raided Tiger Ranch last week, which means those conditions persisted for many years and thousands of cats have died there while Animal Friends, W. Pa Humane Society, and the Butler and Westmoreland County Humane Societies all looked the other way.

Now Iím reading that the same shelters and humane officers we notified supposedly inspected Tiger Ranch and found ďno deficiencies,Ē and the leader of Last Chance for Animals is pronouncing it one of the best run facilities heís ever seen. Are we all on the same planet? Thousands of cats are dead because of these lies. Why are they still covering up this horror?

Itís time the local shelters and humane officers who did the inspections admitted exactly how many cats they brought to Tiger Ranch themselves. Obviously, they were not going to shut down Tiger Ranch when they were using it themselves to maintain their no-kill status, since no-kill status means more donations. Has anyone noticed how many out of state shelters have admitted bringing cats to Tiger Ranch, but not one Southwestern Pennsylvania shelter has released that information."

Charges were refiled:

http://www.pet-abuse.com/cases/13365/PA/US/

Charges of animal cruelty have now been re-filed against a local animal shelter owner. Linda Bruno owns the Tiger Ranch cat sanctuary in Frazer Township. She is now charged with 574 counts of cruelty to animals. Bruno was released on a non-monetary bond.

As a condition of her release, she is to have no contact with her accusers and must not have contact with, care for, or have ownership of any animals.

Bruno's preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 17.

I was hoping they would re-file the charges. Hopefully, they will now, have all their paperwork in order, and witnesses ready to testify as to these horrific conditions.

To those that state..."hospice is a better word for Tiger Ranch"?

Suggest you go & work or volunteer at a real one. Tiger Ranch was NOT a hospice. I've volunteered in hospice care and if ever I had seen conditions as those at Tiger Ranch I probably would have called the police and news reporters.

See the Tiger Ranch Undercover Video that was flagged off of YouTube by those that don't want the public to see what was really going on there:

Clarion County shelter vandalized

By Francine Garrone
VALLEY NEWS DISPATCH
Wednesday, April 9, 2008

The makeshift shelter in Clarion County that is housing nearly 300 sick cats taken from Tiger Ranch in Frazer was vandalized Monday morning.

According to Howard Nelson, chief executive officer of the Pennsylvania branch of the Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals, a brick was thrown through the shelter window in Shippenville.

"Fortunately, no person or animal was harmed," he said. "Terroristic acts by a group of misinformed zealots will not deter the PSPCA's mission to help these cats."

According to Nelson, the surviving 278 cats continue to receive extensive veterinary care. Currently, 75 cats are in critical condition.

Blood and tissue samples from 380 cats that were taken to the makeshift shelter tested positive for parasites and viruses, Nelson said. Many cats are suffering from upper respiratory conditions, severe muscle wasting, oral ulcers, and eyes completely occluded with dried mucus.

"The focus of the PSPCA will continue to be the care and health of the animals saved from Tiger Ranch," he said. "We will not succumb to the ludicrous claims that we removed those cats for publicity."

Opponents of the raid have noted that a crew from an Animal Planet television show accompanied the raid.

You people who are crying and whining about Lin MArie should really wake up and smell the coffee!! She is being accused of animal cruelty and it's so BOGUS it's not funny! I work at a PSPCA and the things found in the video ARE the same things we see in the shelter! Especially during the winter months! So you bash her for not believing in euthanasia? That's BULL! I have news for you, it's a free world, and that was her religion. In PA its legal to take your animal out back and shoot. At least cats that got sick and she could no longer treat went out with some dignity. And SHE DID have VET care for those animals, and she HAS RECORD of it!! I was there in december, and I saw every building! YES, EVERY single building. There's nothing wrong there. WE are constantly putting down animals at the shelter just beacuse there are too many of one color, or the cats/dog looks to rough, or its been there too long, or we're too overcrowded. Do you feel that's humane? That's how Howard runs things at our shelters!! Don't any of your Nelson supporters find it funny that for 7 months of under cover work they only obtained 1 1/2 hours of video??? Come on!! Grow up!! There's so much more to this than you see! Nelson is too worried about himself, money, publicity and animal planet!!! Wisen up! They took her horses because they were supposedly emaciated! I saw them last week!! They are plump!! And for the PSPCA not agreeing with breeding, why is lin's stallion in with two mares?? You're all a bunch of raving lunatics who know nothing about anything. If you dont work at that PSPCA under the leadership of howard nelson, and havent been down to tiger ranch to see the real truth...then you dont know how things really are, so keep your mouths SHUT!

If everyone is so concerned about the welfare of these animals, why aren't you volunteering to help? Fact, Debbie Urmann was hired to help medicate the animals and separate the sick cats from the healthy. Why wasn't she doing her job.

While you are at the vet or ask your shelter, ask them what they do with their dead animals. The answer may surprise you. In PA. there are 3 legal ways to dispose of an animal. 1. cremation, Local landfill or bury them on a farm.

You will find many shelter "store" their dead animals in freezers until they can be disposed of. Whose to say that all the animals in the freezer came from Tiger Ranch?

You are so incorrect with your statement:

http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtri...

Buffalo Township veterinarian Dr. Becky Morrow, one of the four people involved in the undercover sting, said the investigators are only able to release a hour-and-a-half of video at present.

"We have 350 pages of evidence and surveillance video," Morrow said. "The hour-and-a-half of video is public record under the (search) warrant. I can't begin to add up the amount of video we have."

Investigator:'Horrible suffering'

While Bruno had her army of supporters, Mike Winikoff, a former undercover investigator for DeRose's Last Chance for Animals, said in a written statement that he found "horrible suffering" among the cats at Tiger Ranch.

"I was working for Last Chance for Animals when the initial complaints about Tiger Ranch came in to the office," Winikoff said in the statement. He conducted a preliminary investigation.

"I concluded that there was evidence of horrible suffering at Tiger Ranch, and requested authorization to conduct a more thorough investigation. My request was approved, but then abruptly withdrawn.

"I've never fully understood why LCA pulled me off of that investigation," he said. "After I left LCA, I continued to look into Tiger Ranch and became more and more convinced that the allegations were valid.

"As a 20-year veteran of the animal rights movement, including a decade as an undercover investigator, I remain convinced that Tiger Ranch deserved to be closed and investigated for animal cruelty.

"I believe that our mission as animal advocates is to prevent and alleviate suffering wherever it occurs, even when the suffering is created by those who may be trying to do good things for animals.

"I do not believe that good intentions absolve us of the consequences of our actions. That applies both to Tiger Ranch and the people who dumped cats there without fully investigating their likely fate."
