Are teachers (they call them Leaders) supposed to talk trash, give us attitude, roll their eyes and sit in the break room or office all day avoiding helping the students? It sends a real message that that they hate what they do and the hair industry is not a good place to be. But then again, if they could make it doing hair they probably would not be teaching at a school. They preach this Be Nice culture but is a place that is far from that message. I have seen owners act in dispicable ways, aren't they supposed to be leading us? This system is nothing more than a cult riding on a name and upper management getting rich off a concept. I have observed the best leaders getting fired probably because they did not really fit into their culture of rejects and miserable people who have something in common. My best advice is don't do what I did...listen to some speel about how great it is...how about spend a few days at the school watching what really goes on inside. A few hours won't do because they run around and clean up the mess and warn the classrooms to be on good behavior because a visitor is in the buidling. My best advice is go somewhere else.

Well, I don't know about any beauty school, I work in nursing, but I do know when I take my kid to get a hair cut every place I have been to messes it up. We leave and I see long pieces sticking up or it's crooked... I have been to 4 places in the past year and none are any good.
Esthetics class is a JOKE

I'm embarrassed to admit I attend The Vision Academy’s Ambler campus (Esthetics program). I'm writing this for anyone seriously interested in pursuing this field as a career & considering the Ambler campus. With that said, it’s understood that (like anything) more is learned on-the-job, but it all begins with your education. If you’re considering this location, then you’ll be paying good money to come here & learn. If you have expectations of what this program can do for you, here’s of glimpse of what to expect:

Facility
The esthetics program takes place in the upstairs part of the building. There is 1 clinic room (for clients), 3 bathrooms, 1 wax/micro-dermabrasion room, & 1 classroom. The clinic & class rooms are absolutely filthy, nothing gets wiped down & floors never get cleaned. Bathrooms are dirty & usually out of order (embarrassing enough students have to use them, much less a paying client!). The smocks we give clients to wear were once white, but now are stained yellow in a number of areas – GROSS. The excuse was “they’re stained from product”- seems far-fetched considering the smock is worn at the chest, & since we give facial treatments which happen ABOVE the chest, how is a smock stained from the chest down?

Curriculum
The first day of class you’d expect some type of structure (maybe a syllabus or something to map out what to expect every week). Don’t hold your breath because it’s whatever the “teacher”, Brenda Kress, feels like doing. Brenda is an older woman who has some skin care knowledge & training, but is best described by her students as Dr. Jekyll/My. Hyde. You never know what kind of a day it will be with her.

Brenda has absolutely no head to mouth filter & she demonstrates that quite often. Overall, you can expect a daily attitude, snide remarks & sarcastic answers. She might have had a lot of knowledge back 30+ years ago when she went thru schooling, but her knowledge base is not up to date. She also loves to promote the skin care brand they use at the school (which is CRAP)–because she makes commission from it, not because the line is actually good!

The curriculum layout you’re given by the admissions rep (great sales person - which is the only reason people even come to this school) lists the things you’ll be covering - including facials, microdermabrasion, makeup, waxing, etc. One of the biggest misconceptions about the curriculum is the makeup portion, as there is NO training whatsoever. The curriculum says you’ll have 80 hours worth of theory, technique & application, but what it really means is that you’ll be given some dollar store brushes, a few drug store brand eye shadows & some mineral foundation to play in class & apply makeup on each other any old way you want. That’s it – end of “lesson”.

The objective should be to learn & prep for state boards, but the truth is that some nights we just sit in class & b.s. When we actually ARE learning by practicing on one another, Brenda is usually wandering around & chit chatting. It’s no secret that the ‘new’ people learn everything from the ‘seniors’. Perhaps the people about to graduate should get paid Brenda’s salary, since they’re doing her job. Regardless of her title at the school, Brenda is nothing more than a physical presence in the building – she can be considered a teacher when she decides to TEACH!

Her unprofessional behavior extends even in the classroom when she talks about students to other students! The night class hears numerous stories (& names) from ‘problem’ students in the day class...even making fun of them! It’s clear that Brenda gets away with a lot – how she still has a job is unknown.

Do yourself a favor - stay AWAY from the Ambler campus. If you’re serious about pursuing skin care as a career – go to a better school and actually LEARN so you can love what you do and be profitable.

Good Luck!
