I live in Catasauqua and I also live on Front Street. The condition of the town is not the "fault" of the slum lords, it is the fault of the past 30 years of a Borough Council who didn't do a darn thing to stop what is here to stay. The past Chair of Council for 30 years and some of those who sat by him did nothing proactive. They had not vision about what Catty could be they took the easy way out and didn't plan ahead or for the future. Consequently the airport is taking out taxpaying land, they had 30 years to try and negotiate that one but look how ABE has grown. Catasauqua has great history which should and could have been turned into dollars but did the past council have the vision to do anything with the gem we have, no. there are two members on council who will automatically say no to if it has anything to do with historic. How ignorant and fiscally irresponsible. Many times they don't even read thier information before the meetings and know nothing about the proposals on which they are rejecting. I love it when one in particular does that, then he shows his true laziness and lack of intelligence and fullness of ignorance. So the blame doew not belong solely at the feet of the slum lords but at the Borough Council, and lack of Code Enforcement, who will continue to allow them to get away with it. Give us a new borough manager and replace two of the longer standing members, some vision and creativity and maybe Catty would have a chance.

Catasauqua'a history, in relation to the real historical sights within driving distance, is negligeable. The $250,000 historic George Taylor building borough council approved purchasing wasn't even a main home to GT himself. We cannot and never will compare to Philly, or New York. We should never be New Hope. What we should do is start reminding council that WE elected THEM, and we aren't happy with the job they're doing for the constituents of this town.
Perhaps the article was missed in the current paper that the fire chief doesn't like the location of the proposed new site, and I guarantee that ths "stolen" property from ClimATemp will be forced down his throat.
The current show of creativity and vision is an example of idiocy, improper utilization of borough funds and a council that is more concerned with people driving through town than the people they are elected to represent. They're a joke but for 3, in my opinion. And they're probably the ones you want replaced...poor decision. Those 3 are the only ones that don't have anything to gain monetarily.
Thank God we have a mayor that cares about the people that live here, and not just about the passers-by...or we'd be totally screwed.

Read some of your local history and focus in on the Industrial Revolution. I was not just talking about the fantastic architecture we have but the HISTORY that happened in Catasauqua. Catasauqa has "real" history and some very important history. A long time ago that should have been cashed in on, by the Borough Council and commerce which would have given Catasauqua some monies in the bank rather than living from budget to budget. It is unrealistic to even remotely think that we would be a Philadelphia or New York, so that would never be a talking point. What a rediculous notion. We could have been something special though. The people driving through town should be saying to themselves, "this looks like a nice place to live". Instead I read nasty negative comments like the ones in this blog and I feel sad that Catasuqua won't be changing anytime soon. As far as the comments about Climatemp I too agree that the property should not be taken by eminent domain. Again, this is a chronic argument which should have been settled tens of years ago. Probably by the 3 council members whom you see in such high esteem. They obviously did a great job for the 30 years or so they were sitting in their seats!!!Look at the wonderful thriving Borough they passed on to their successors. Regarding the Mayor. It is time for her to move on. Our police are seriously lacking in productivity. I have experienced that personally several times living on Front Street. They do not make me feel safe and secure. How many police chiefs go on 3-4day weekends regularly and have an RV, and park it on Howertown for days to weeks causing obstruction to vision. The Mayor, his boss, doesn't say have gumption to say have some courtesy and move that thing so your neighbors can park and people don't have to pull into the middle of the street to look and see if it is save to pull out. Common Sense. Seroiusly lacking in Catasauqua. Time to move. Too many small minded people who don't see that you need to plan ahead responsibly, not with your opinions of who you like or not. Who you like or dislike and why should not enter into decisions made which effect a communiy. Nothing personal but I am glad you are not making the decisions.

I always wondered about who was parking there RV on Howertown the way they did...It is an obstruction to say the least. Im glad at least someone is making enough to afford a beast like that.

OK, something that I am noticing from many of the comments that are posted, is that none of you live in Catasauqua. I happen to live here and will continue to do so and fight the issues that the we are going through. This is the only way things can get better. Those of you viewing us as the "armpit" of the universe lets see you move here to help fix the problem. It is easy to complain, but no one is eager to take action to help make things better. Maybe now that there is light on this people should start taking action and take back their neighborhoods. Until you have the guts to do this, stop saying how horrible our area is becoming because your not part of solution, your part of the problem.
Thank God someone with some common sense and responsibility. Thank you for speaking up.

In the Old Testament, you claimed you were "made in god's image." So you didn't clamp down on the border after the Mexican War. Then, you passed the Jones Act in 1917, creating the terror of the little island. In 1965 and 1986, you gave up any semblance of border security.

Now, you wring your hands and still talk about "God." Meanwhile, the invaders, including an estimated 600,000 Moslems per annum, keep bla-zaying in via land, air and sea, legal and illegal at 3,000,000 total per year. It's called the "Masochism Tango."

Oh by the way, it seems odd that there are so many comments about Catasauqua from people outside of town. If you don't live here...don't crap on this town. I have wonderful neighbors, and have met some incredible people here, and I don't appreciate those I have come to care for being called stupid and trashy.

I live there, I have lived there for 6 years my husband grew up there and has resided in Catty for 30 years. I love the "original" Catty not what Front street is turning into. It is deteriorating rapidly. I live in North Catty so Im not sure what I can do for Catty, they are rather divided even though we are one in the same.

We used to go to music shows at the West Catty Playground, the Catty Shack, Legion Hall, Moose Hall in the 1980s; we didn't bother anyone but they kicked us out anyway. Now Catty wishes we were back because it can't remove these permanent invaders.

Catty has been a place where "outsiders" are not accepted for a long time. There is a very deeply knit "old boys network" mentality among many long time residents. Many of the worst offenders are/were "household name" types. These were the kind of people whose kids would beat someone up just for the fun of it. And, they were encouraged to do so by the adults in this illustrious group. The only thing that could "save" a kid who wasn't accepted was athletic ability. If you were a good athlete, suddenly somehow you were "in". I know I am not the only one who experienced this. I gave in and joined the sports meatheads. Along with friends I did the same thing to others that was done to me before I was "in". Rarely was behavior like this stopped because we were fooootball players. Although that was not the only sport in which I participated, it was by far the biggest offending group. I also gave up other "unacceptable interests" and didn't take school seriously enough.

So, if you want to "clean up" Catty it will take more than simply jumping on HUD landlords and criminals. It will take a look inward as well.

I think the divisor may be lagely due to being in different counties. I could be mistaken. Thank God Catty isn't just Front Street, although I see more problems on Second St, the 200 block, developing. I wish I could have known Catty 30 years ago, unfortunately, people and times are changing. Or, maybe it's just us knowing better what is important.

This makes me depressed. It really does. I grew up in Catty and a long time ago I remember it was common for people to leave their cars unlocked you could take a long walk in the middle of the night and you'd see no one and if you did they would actually say hi or nothing at all....

I noticed it first back in 2000... there was a time when you needed a pretty good amount of income in order to live here. There was no such thing as section 8 or hud here... but a few years ago the acres in allentown close down and for whatever reason catty decided to degrade themselves and lower their standards and say "hey c'mon over here it's okay take our houses and turn this town to crap we don't mind"

At one point I would have been very offended to hear anyone say anything bad about catty... but now especially going down Front street.... I still think Allentown is worse, but catty is on it's way.

There has been more and more attacks and vandalism here! How many more people have to get attacked killed stabbed beaten or robbed in order for this town to do something!!

Kick out these dead beat slum lords and out of country land lords!!! Kick out these people that are on hud and section 8.

Maybe if they held actual jobs and stopped having 1000 kids at one time they wouldn't need to be on welfare!!

Sorry to anyone that disagrees with me but it's how I feel. I hate the fact that when I leave my apartment I keep my porch light on because I dont feel comfortable walking alone in the dark anymore. I hate the fact that I have 2 doors and I lock both and put in a pad lock on the top floor.

C'mon Catty!! WTF are you DOING?!?!?!

Sad thing is Catty was a place for the common white folk, now its turning in to little Allentown.
We had a couple of blacks in our class, but they were whiter than most whites in Catty now. Upstanding people can come in all colors. Unfortunately, too many "tans" now come from the island that thinks it's a part of the USA, but can't behave properly.

yes, there is influx of new people in town, but you must realize that he ones renting are the one to blame. The government will just keep giving HUD and some do need help but then there are others that just don't care. Look at our elderly that have lived through the depression and survived without help. We still have them living here and they have pride in their property. The younger ones should look and see what you can have if you WORK for what you want. Life isn't easy for anyone! Yes, the parents must take pride in themselves and teach respect to their children. Let's get out of the WELFARE generation! Take pride in your community and come help CATTY. It has changed and we must call the police and the borough council when we see crime and propertoes that are runedown. Please call the borough code enforcement and borough manager with your complaints about property. What business district is left when the new businesses have left. Support new business that come here. Three businesses just nleft nbecause of lack of business from thehometown people. Stand up for your community and come to borugh council meetiongs and learn wht the council is doing to nyour town.
