Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Gordo. Unfortunately, there won't be a war to bail out our economy this time. Blowbama won't fight. He's a muslim AND a coward!

Uncle,
So in order for the economy to turn around we have to go to war? I thought we've been at war for the last 6 years, or don't you know any servicemen? Its obvious war is not the answer. There is a big difference between the 1930's and 40's and now. Then, the economy was improved by the war because goods were manufactured and produced in the United States by American workers. A prime example was Bethlehem Steel. Those jobs are gone in the US, and this economy is the result. Outsourcing of manufacturing jobs to foreign countries has left the country void of profitable exports of goods that the world needs, and thus the economy suffers. Profitable companies are only those who make money off citizens' debt or the inflated healthcare market; i.e. insurance companies, pharmaceuticals, and credit companies.

Your handle fits your response. I didn't know we were in a war from 1931 to 1936!

I'm sorry, I'm not sure how my comment referenced a war from '31-'36.

During the 1930's the federal government threw as much money as it could to works projects. The deficit (as a % of GDP was at it's highest level). Unfortuately in hindsight, we now know the massive spending prolonged the depression.

I do agree that many beautiful works of masterpiece were created during this time and, I compliment the craftsmen of the day that their endeavors have lasted to this day.

My question is, does individual ruggedism or government entity provide the best fodder for economic prosperity? I think we could all agree that we have been moving to the latter over the last 50+ years. Each has its flaws and successes, but which one is best?

Wow, this letter will get the right-wingers upset. They love to pretend that government can't do anything right and yet, here we have a personal testimonial about the WPA projects and all the jobs that were created.

Facts can be stubborn things.

Gordon,

Good for you. I am glad you survived those days with grace and determination.

However, did you ever think how much better off you would even be then and today if there was no depression of the 30's?

That depression was caused purely by a few men (statist politicians) who thought they knew better, but made life more miserable for everyone. I remember them too, I was very small but did'not know any better. We just survived. We had to plant a V-garden and pick berries just to eat. I know our lives would have improved significately without the human caused depression.

Sounds like you were very fortunate.

Yes, Avis, the roads in this country are in great shape. Thank you public sector.

And, of course, an example from 75 years or so ago of someone who was helped by the WPA proves how efficient government is here in the 21st century.

Fact: Unemployment ranged from 15%-25% from 1932-1941. The Japs, not FDR's New Deal, got us out of the depression. How does that saying go? Those who do not remember history are doomed to repeat it.

Go Chase Braer Rabbit, will you? You want more wars? What an idiot. It's the IRAQ WAR that helped put us in this mess, plus the greed of Wall Street. I hope they choke on their bonuses.

Comrade rabies,

You still blaming ex-President Bush?

Your in the wrong year. And your new Messiah is still procecuting the war on an upscale level. He is going after terrorists in Pakistan where they come from and return to hide.

Actually I agree with that.

But you don't. That makes you a hypocrite. If you hate Bush for war, why do you give a pass to Comrade Obama who is actually more war than even Bush.

The answer? HYPOCRITE!

To all of you who think that substantial deficit spending of FDR was the reason we came out of the economic depression, please get your facts straight. FDR's own Secretary of the Treasury stated on numerous occasions that the massive government spending did little to resolve the great depression. Moreover, a recent study by UCLA, hardly a domain for conservative economic thought, concluded that the massive government spending of the 1930s actually inhibited economic growth for some 20 years (early 1950s). FACT, FACT,FACT. Oops, can't let facts get in the way of O Bama our messiah.
