Look into West Speedway or West IronWood Hills (West of North Greasewood Road). Quiet, spread out. Your kinda away from the city, but the backside pockets (since there are hills) your still within city limits.

The East side was too congested. Anywhere on Southside is spread out with rough areas. The Northside are the foothills and can likely get pricey. Tucson Midtown too much crime. and Oro Valley is just too far away from downtown - though Oro Valley is nice too!

West-side on hills NOT in the valley are ideal, you have nice view of valley floor and downtown and you see the Catalina Mtns, Mount Lemon, Mount Bigelow and the Rincons on the far east side! You 10 mins from 1-10 freeway to PHOENIX whereas eastside, your about 30 minutes.

HOpe this helps!

You didn't give a budget window, that's the big determinant. Things are a lot more expensive out here than in KY except for maybe gasoline and cactus jelly.

Some parts of midtown are cleaner, safer and less congested than the outlying areas and the neighborhoods have some character; they aren't just cookie-cutter tract homes. But stay away from the heavy apartment areas.

be aware that landlords in Tucson, especially on the economy side can be really sh*tty.
the city does little or nothing to stop substandard housing rental units, and the courts aren't much better. landlords there do whatever the hell they want with little fear of retribution from the government.
when I left rents were getting high and quality was not improving. also most of the stuff you see advertised in rentals online is just lies, lies, lies. I encourage you to THOROUGHLY check any unit before renting, avoid big deposits and try to avoid realturds, they are a bunch of crooks and liars.
That's my experience from 10 yrs renting in Tucson.

We moved from Atlanta to Tucson 2 years ago and ended up north of Thornydale at Tangerine ... There are several nice developments off of Camino de Oeste as well as Moore Rd - both at Thornydale and La Cholla at Moore Rd and La canada at Moore Rd. We can get anywhere in the city in about 20-30 minutes - even mid and downtown. We love the quiet up here .. Best of luck to you.(PS the hardest thing about moving here was re-establishing your health care connections. It is hard to get appts)

Also...check out all of the communities along Rancho Vistoso Dr.(from Tangerine to Oracle).... a perfect over 50 area with golf, tennis, pickleball, and lots of activities . You should be able to rent a house in that area for the winter. Good Luck!
