i have been to carolina beach every year for the past 15. It is great. I like it because it is family focused, and very laid back. There is tons of stuff to do, without all the crowds.

Oak Island is also family focused and not as touristy as Carolina Beach. We have family in Wilmington and visit Carolina Beach when we see them, but do our family vacation on Oak Island because it is so much nicer. There is a lot to do there. They have free movie night in Middleton Park every friday night. You can also rent kayaks and go in the Davis canal. (a lot less crowded then the ICWW) There is also jungle golf, two piers for fishing (you don't need a license to fish on the pier), biking, restaurants, nature center, shopping. You can take the ferry to fort fisher and visit the aquarium or historical area. They have outdoor music at Oak Island pier sometimes (check with Upstairs at the Beach for bands playing) You could head to the point and watch the sunset (most beaches on the east coast don't face south so you can see both sunrise and sunset on the beach) There is also a lot of geocaching if you are into that) Southport is a great place to shop, eat and visit the marina. Wilmington is only 45 minutes away. Oak Island is a great choice. Hope you enjoy your stay.

I've been going to holden beach now for 10-15 years, every year for the forth. and this year its the same.I'll be leaving here on the 3rd. I would love to get more info on oak island. it sounds like it much nicer than holden, is'nt oak island just south of holen. we rent a house on the island its a canal house. my son loves to fish he would rather fish than eat. It has a floating dock right in the back yard. Is oak island like that or just hotels.

Oak Island is actually north of Holden Beach, you can see each island from the other island, Oak Island does not have canal docks, like Holden, but they do have a canal in the middle of the island that has houses with docks all around it. They have two fishing piers for fishing. You don't need a license if your own the pier, but it does cost. It's a small price and you can buy by the day, week or season. Oak Island is bigger then Holden and there are only a few hotels and condos. Nothing over 4 stories. Oak Island has a fire works display at Ocean Crest pier every year. If you're going to be around at that time, you may want to pop over and visit the island. We love it and wouldn't vacation any place else.

I LoVE Oak Island. I have been to Myrtle Beach, Kure Beach, and Hilton Head several times and this is by far the most relaxing place of the 3. Its very quaint and quite, and if you want to do something you do have to travel to either myrtle beach or over to carolina beach or wilmington. If you go for relaxation then this is the best place ever! We love it and Iam usually into the whole shopping and playing thing but Oak Island makes you wanna chill and relax!!
