Lorne Braddock's letter is silly. America was divided long before the current President was elected, long before W. was elected and long before Clinton was elected. Every president wants to be and claims to be a uniter. That was one of W's campaign pronouncements as well as Obama's.
It is the American people that have the problem. The current Tea Party movement is just the latest in a long line of media manipulated movements. Americans paid lower taxes this year than all but one year in the past fifty and yet Tea Party folks protest that taxes have been raised. America is running two wars on credit, has a crumbling infrastructure and a lot of cleanup to do but we want to pass those costs on to our children and grandchildren. Did Braddock complain when we invaded Iraq and cut taxes at the same time? How did she expect the bill to be paid. Tea Partiers rant about Al Gore being in the climate change discussion for the money yet somehow miss the fact that their leading spokespeople such as Hannity and Beck are absolutely in it for the money. They are paid performers for goodness sakes.
Americans live in security and luxury relative to the rest of the world and yet we squeal like little piggies when asked to pay for our very nice lives. We scream about high taxes then demand the government shield us from every disaster, natural or man made.
The first half of the last century brought much tragedy and considerable unity to this country. That persisted for a while after WWII but then faded. Since then we have grown ever more divided and ever more selfish. Our current 24 hour a day media feed off this divisiveness a therefore encourage it. Politicians have always played the "them or us" game. In the end it is "We, the People" who have to build a lasting and peaceful society. But my bet is that we continue to fight amongst ourselves as we always have. I'd like to lose that bet.
