concerning Grant Bailey's letter on the nation and the military. The founders of this nation were very careful to put a civilian in charge of military matters. They also resisted creating a standing army and resisted foreign entanglements. The United States is a nation of laws first and foremost. It's strength lies in the equality of all under the law. We are dependent on commerce and the right to free speech. We spend more on our military than all other nations combined and yet military victories short of absolute destruction are no longer likely. The President of the United States is the Commander in Chief of the nations armed forces. He can speak to the men and women who serve under his command any time and any place he choses. Just because this president believes we should be able to talk as well as fight doesn't make him anti military. If he can find a way to achieve a goal without sending in the troops he will save money and lives. War is expensive and wasteful, the fact the armed forces are necessary should be no point of pride for humanity.
