I read in the clinch valley times that a school board meeting will be held to discuss the possibility of closing cleveland and elk garden elementary. i have some opinions on this and wondered everyone elses.

And before everyone goes crazy on here let's try to listen to opinions of all people from all over the county.

my thoughts are why havent these schools already been closed. several years ago dante school was closed then followed clinch river. after a few years copper creek school was turned into a school for pre k and kindergarden for castlewood elem. the people of lebanon and honaker feeder schools want to keep their schools open as did the people of the above mentioned castlewood feeder schools, but if there are room for students at lebanon for these students why should these schools be left open. i know parents want their small children close to home and to have a more personal education, but is this far to the parents of the dante and clinch river area. their schools were closed due to small enrollement and because room for the students was available at castlewood. also with money being the way it is it would probably save money to have these students in one school. the money savings would benefit students across the whole county.

also, why isnt it beind discussed to move students from givens and swords creek to one school.

i remember before lebanon had a new high school and had the old pittston building, are these schools full or are there room for more students in these buildings. if these schools are not full then why is the pittston building open?

lastly, why are the schools in dante clinch river and the oak grove school sitting empty. do these places not belong to the school board. why are these properties not sold to help with the budgets instead of being left empty and falling down.

I know little about the school system except it is a HUGE county expense, so if there are ways to save money and give students ALL across the county an equal education then the school board and citizens should look at all possibilities.

It's called PISS POOR PLANNING!!! The writing is already on the wall we need to START the planning process NOW within 10 years we will only need one that is 1 High School in the county and I think we could get by with only 1 middle school as well.

All enrollments by grade level by school is public information.

The biggest issue facing the county doing is is the downward spiral. If we layoff teachers, assistant principals these are what one would call middle class jobs for Russell County. When these people start moving out of Russell County to find jobs, more housing will be on the market, with more houses on the market prices will drop. When prices drop the value of our homes drop, with lower values, our tax rates drop paying less taxes for the county. Where will it STOP?

I would suggest that people start planning NOW, move your ass out of Russell County as soon as you can sell your house things are only going to get worse!

No we are not moving, even if they close these schools it does mean its the end of the world, plus the housing market is up right now, plus I can't wait to see my children have to be taught by the same teachers I dealt with, its going to be interesting!

I say let them close them and ship all these kids to Lebanon! Cleveland needs to be closed because its only being half assed ran by the part-time principal there! Used to be a good school until he got to many irons in the fire and actually cared about the kids! He just worries about numbers, not the kids!! Shame Shame Mr. Preacher man!!

Are they any good looking teachers at these bigger schools? I know when I went to school we only had a few hot teachers! Most of them where old and gray and the rest where uglier than shit!! I really prefer my children have teachers that are nice and beautiful, because my wife is beautiful, and I am not use to dealing with fugly women! Looks matter! This is my biggest pet peeve!

I have heard but not sure true that all pre-k,K, and Ld classroom aides..All music and libririans..Then also a dozen or more random teachers from schools that are closing and some from the smaller schools like Elk Garden, Givens, and etc were they can combine classroom due to smaller type numbers.

they should leave them alone. it makes no sense to transport the kids to other schools when nothing is wrong with the ones they are at. seems it'd cost more to do the re-routing of all the children, but, anything the county does isn't supposed to make sense anyways, does it.

Get rid of all the little schools..Most kids dont have that choice anyway..YEa I would love for my child to go to Elk Garden then Lebanon, but they willl not allow me to even transport my own child there because I dont live in that area and probaply make the enrollment too high..Get rid of them all its a waste of money.Send them to Honaker or Lebanon...The small schools which is waste of money is Givens, Swords Creek, Belfast, Elk Garden, and Cleveland..

People can be nasty to you, but you are telling the truth. Alot of people have lost their jobs or got pay cuts the past couple of years and it's time the teacher join us. I've been living on almost nothing and paying highter taxes while watching these teachers get raises and free stuff, just for being "part of the team". Enough already! I hate to see these small schools shut down too, but if they'd done it a few years ago, maybe we wouldn't be in such a mess today. Unemployed taxpayers can't get us out of this mess. Remember this mess election day.

I think it is time to close some of these smaller schools across the county. All I hear is how teachers are so under paid, I for one considered the pay scale when thinking about my career. So I figure they all knew the pay wasn't so great. Anytime I go in the school or even scrolling on Facebook, they are all wishing for a snow day or late schedule. Do any of them ever think about the people who still have to go to work? If they work from 10 til 2, they still get paid for a full day. If I work the same hours then I get paid for 4 hours. What about the snow days that are never made up because they are forgiven by the state?. The teacher still gets paid. I think it time for them to realize they are not the only people who are working. I have not had a raise in over 5 years, because of the economy. I actually made 5000 less in 2012 than in 2011, because of less oportunity for overtime. If increasing taxes is what it takes to keep schools open, and give teachers a raise. I vote NO. And yes I have children in the school system.
