My wife and I live in Los Angeles and we are considering moving to Castle Rock. I love golf and fly fishing. I am not a huge fan of the winters, but I did grow up in Connecticut so I can handle the snow.

How is it living in Castle Rock?

How is the winter weather?

How is the Fishing and Golf?

It the commute to Denver full of bad traffic?

Is there crime in Castle Rock?

Thanks!

MJ -

Great to hear that you're thinking of coming to Colorado. As a transplant myself, I can say that coming here has been a very positive experience.

The draw to Castle Rock, and the broader Douglas County area, is exactly what you mention in your post. There are a number of outstanding golf courses in Douglas County, including one that's associated with the City of Castle Rock (Red Hawk Ridge), one just south (Bear Dance), and one to the north (The Ridge at Castle Pines North). There are several others within a 20 minute radius, as well as five or six excellent private clubs. From a fishing perspective, the Deckers area is a 45 minute drive and the mountain streams range from a 90 minute drive to a two hour drive.

The commute to downtown varies, depending on the time of day and day of the week. If you catch it at the right time, you can hit downtown in under 20 minutes. In the thick of a bad rush hour during ugly weather, it can approach an hour. However, the thick traffic is rarer these days, as they've expanded I-25 to five higher speed lanes, and the light rail into downtown is an outstanding alternative from down here.

Crime is virtually non-existent. We will occassionally have a shocking event, but it's very rare and typically isolated to a unique circumstance such as a domestic dispute.

The winter weather is bit more extreme in Douglas County than it is in Denver proper, but it still doesn't approach anything you've seen in Connecticut. We have several SoCal natives as neighbors and they've mainly said that they are pleasantly surprised by the mild nature of Colorado weather. We will get big snow dumps - usually a couple inches more than you'll downtown because we are at a higher elevation and close to the Palmer Divide - but it tends to melt off in a couple days and be replaced by 50s and even 60s with sunshine. In other words, you'll get multiple tastes of winter, but it's nothing like the Northeast or Midwest US where winter comes in December and sticks around full time until April. In fact, many golf courses are playable year-round here.

I hope that gives you some insight into the area. As I said, we're big fans, and find it a beautiful and friendly place to live.

Castle Rock is a nice quiet town. Great golf, climate, and outdoor activities are plentiful.
Crime happens as it does many places, but CR in general has low crime due to it's amount of armed law abiding citizens. We look out for one another and we come together as a community.
Please, don't come here and expect it to be Cali, or think they should adopt Cali ways, or be like Cali. If thats what you want, stay in Cali. There's way too much of that going on here. Don't screw with our little slice of heaven.

You get the chance to prove how romantic you can be when the mood is right. Why not arrange a candlelit encounter with that very special person in your life.
