MERMAIDS' LAST SPLASH? -- OrlandoSentinel.com

Full story: Orlando Sentinel

Legend has it that mermaids live forever. That may not be true for the mermaids of Weeki Wachee, the quirky Florida attraction whose glory days have been eclipsed by newer, grander theme parks.

I have lived here almost 20 years and of all the hundreds of out-of-the-way places I have visited like Coral Castle, Spook Hill, Big Tree Park, etc, I have never been to Weeki Wachee. Guess it's time to plan a trip.
It's a shame so many people concentrate on the big theme parks. Our best memories are from the trips we took to these places that are off the beaten trail.

I just went to see this again two weeks ago and it brought back childhood memories for me growing up in Fla in the 60's & 70's ! Although it's not what it use to be I hope someone takes an interest in it and keeps it alive. It is a great piece of Fla. history!

Check out Lu Vickers' book, Weeki Wachee, City of Mermaids--it tells the whole history of the park, complete with over 200 photographs. See it on Amazon.com

Inspired by Saturday's article in the Orlando Sentinel, I drove over on Sunday and had a marvelous day.

Less than half the price of a day at any of "the big three" (WDW, UO/IOA, SW) it was very relaxing, and the water park is included! So send the teens over there while you enjoy the mermaid shows, animal show, and river cruise.

Now this weekend was the official 60th Anniversary of Weeki Wachee, but the "former" mermaids come back once a month to perform their special show.

Don't wait!

I dreamed of becoming a mermaid when I was a child. It was a tradition to spend a day at Weeki Wachee every Summer during my visit to my grandmother's. One of her friends, named Gertrude started as a mermaid in the first years of the show - she was 13 when she started, and she made it sound wonderful. People hardly believe me now when I talk about the place. Hope it keeps going.

I grew up here in Central Florida before the mouse came and ruined a wonderful place to call home. We were just big enough and just small enough. Going to Weeki Wachee was a highlight of summertime. What is so sad is that now we who have lived here all of our lives are leaving to get back to a quieter, simpler life.
Thanks for the memories

We moved to Brooksville in 1957. I learned how to swin at Weeki Wachee and spent many a day in that beautiful water as a kid and as a teenager. I was there the day Elvis Pressley was there. I also knew some of the mermaids in the 60's, as their children were my classmates. We would swim over from the public swimming area to the borderline of the mermaid show (what a great view from the water). It is a wonderful place to visit. If you have never been, go now before it is too late. I will miss it, but I will always be thankful for the memories.

Well, we went to Weeki Wachee last weekend and then on to Tarpon Springs to a bed and breakfast. What a great trip! Weeki Wachee is a great place, not too crazy on prices and not too crazy on anything. Great mermaid show although I wish we could have seen the reunion show. The mermaids really put a lot into the show and everyone in the audience seemed to love it. I know my wife and I did.
We had a great time in Tarpon Springs too. If you want a real gyro sandwich you have to go to Tarpon Springs and have a Mythos beer to go with it. We want to go there again, so we will probably repeat the Weeki Wachee trip too.
Next trip will be when the weather is cooler and we can follow the Pinellas bike trail more than a few miles (to work off all those baklavas). Last weekend was just a little too hot for biking.

This park has been on death watch for quite a while. It just doesn't seem to get quite enough of a crowd to prosper enough.

Well, it was a nice show. Now get the ladies out of the water before they disturb the ameobas.

My mom used to take me here when I was real little and one of things I remember was laughing at my sister because she didnt want to go on the rock to wait for a mermaid, another thing is me waiting and Debbie the mermaid coming up. I remember thinking "Wow, I want a pink shiny tail too!!!" That made such a positive impact on my life and I hope when I finally start having children that when I take them there it will leave amazing memories that the mermaids of Weekie Wachee left for me in them.
