No more laws are needed. These incidents, while unfortunate, are not a reason for more legislation. We need LESS government.

People have to be responsible for themselves, you can't legislate common sense or morality.

Our legislators need to do the REAL work of cutting out frivolous spending and removing nanny-state legislation.

if the place is a danger to the community close it down-if it is safe-keep it open-but stop pussyfooting around.

The original poster had it right, but the Slantinel omitted his post because it went against their liberal left PC viewpoints. A person could easily rent a car from Avis or Hertz and go out on I-4 and run it up to 90 mph and run headlong into a bridge abutment with their whole family aboard. Will people then froth at the mouth about the possibility of having to have mental health background checks on potential renters of cars, trucks, aircraft, boats, RVs ? All can be used just as easily by nut balls like the ones who offed themselves at Shoot Straight.

I agree with Shoot Straight though. I think renting puts them into a bad position, even if it is a position that they should feel no responsibility or liability for. We cannot legislate ourselves to the point of protecting ourselves from every possible hazard. We have too many laws on the books already and most are not being enforced.

Thank all those legislators who passed the flood of "privacy rights" laws for not having the mental health records on computer today. You thought that was a super thing didn't you? Well, even if Shoot Straight was tied into the National law enforcement computer system, they'd not see anything about patient privacy matters on it.
We have people today under treatment for mental diseases who are potentially a danger to themselves and others and who may have stopped taking their medications and getting ready to "flip" but thanks to all the privacy protections, we cannot see their records and won't till they commit some horrendous crime.

Shoot Straight is no more a danger to the community than any other business in operation.
It isn't the gun, it isn't the ammunition, it isn't the target range, it is the people who wander in off of the street and can use anything they can lay their hands on and do the same thing to themselves and others. The comment above about renting a vehicle is a great example. Are you saying we must close down every business that sells or rents or loans things to the public that can be used to kill ? Maybe we should shut down the people who sell Propane because it can be turned into a fire bomb. Gasoline can be used to kill. We know Nitrate of Soda and diesel fuel can be used for making bombs that kill. Want to tell farmers that they cannot buy that? Insecticides can be swallowed, bleach can be swallowed. Want to ban those?

Why not just stay in bed and don't come out? Suck your liberal thum and lay there in a fetal position?

I have to ask: how, exactly, will background checks on gun rentals stop people from shooting themselves?

There is no way the FBI background checker on the other end of the line is going to be able tell if someone is going to commit suicide with the gun.

"But..but..CTone, you cold hearted scumbag, the background check only costs five dollars! If it saves ONE LIFE!!!"

Spare me. Even if you could stop people from killing themselves at gun ranges, they will find another way. It's just as absurd as putting fences up on bridges to stop people from jumping.

Enough with the stupid laws already!

If someone is going to kill themselves, or someone else, they will find a way to do it.

If you eliminate all guns from the planet, they will find a way to do it.

Am armed society is a polite society. Take away the guns and you’ll take away the peace. Above posters are correct, these people will find a way to off themselves. What are we going to do, outlaw rope, knives, cars, trains, balconies, cliffs, and so on?

This particular moron was never on the street with a gun, that is why they had to rent one.

You are right on the money. Back when Florida eased restriction on concealment permits, this bully I knew actually said, "It's getting to the point where you have to be careful what you say even to wimps. They all have guns." Well, sign me up.

I think every law abiding citizen should carry a concealed firearm. Firearm training, safety and shooting, should be taught in schools. We have to stop raising generations of effete intellectuals as we legislate even more lax laws which allow their counterpart, savage barbarians, to run rampant in our cities' streets. We need to harden ourselves to the realities of the world. We have absolutely lost control - surrendered - vast areas to thugs and criminals and we need to take it back. An armed robber at a Seven Eleven with twenty rounds in his torso is the very best deterrent, and the only one these bastards really respect. Jail certainly ain't getting it done.

Once again we see the mentally ill take center stage. This is a tragedy certainly, and not just for the family of the deceased. This event will most likely negatively impact the business owners who have to endure the both clean-up time and costs and backlash from those who do not understand the law; not to mention the loss of revenue from renting handguns to NORMAL and SANE people.

...."Ritz said all the attention generated by the incidents at Shoot Straight could prompt others to try the same. He doesn't think a background check will stop someone intent on committing suicide."
That is so, so true. If a person is hell bent on taking their life, they will do anywhere at anytime.
