Casselberry rule about parking trucks sparks blue-collar revolt

There are 72 comments on the Orlando Sentinel story from Jun 24, 2009, titled Casselberry rule about parking trucks sparks blue-collar revolt. In it, Orlando Sentinel reports that:

A seemingly obscure rule about where to park trucks has sparked a fundamental debate about the identity of this blue-collar suburb: Should Casselberry try to look more like Heathrow? City commissioners say they just wanted to clean up neighborhoods a bit when they required that owners of vans or trucks that have racks for pipes and ladders park ...

What I love about the City of Casselberry officials is they wouldn't do anything about a dilapidated fence being torn down daily by scum while surrounding homeowners fought to put up a barrier to separate their property from this scum. The Casselberry police won’t protect us from the drug dealers on our streets, they can’t find criminals hiding in a closet (personal experience), but you’re going to waste tax dollars sending them to my house, after I’ve spent a 10 hour day at work, I’ve come home to find that yet again this scum has come onto my property and stole my belongings off my property, and the city instead of helping me is going to fine me because I have a work truck on my property and instead of my neighbor supporting and sympathizing my misfortune he’s going to export me 50 miles because my work truck is making his property value go down??? This is a social bashing of the working class because Casselberry is powerless against the real issue that’s ruining its reputation.

i have neighbors who do anything from A/C repair, to lawn maintenance, to plumbing and electrical and they all keep their vehicles screened, parked correctly on the side yard, etc.

If your a good responsible citizen, you abide by the rules and your neighbors will appreciate you. If you disregard your communities needs for selfish reasons looking for excuses not to conform, then yes, Bithlo might work for you.

Gee, and why do you think that your attracting criminal element to your neighborhood? If you have unkept, unclean home, and street for that matter, you attract undesirables to your area. I'm willing to but you have a crack house or 2 within walking distance to your house...

They got there because A) rent was cheap because B) your property value is low because C)code enforcement is weak D) there's no sense of proud home ownership E) people stopped caring.

Those are the basic fundamental priciples of what makes a community. In fact your serving as comedy relief to many of these participants because you simply don't get it. It's EMBARRASSING how people from other communities/cities/towns are blogging on here and pointing it out to you. They must really think Casselberry is full of ignorant slobs.

Its pretty common for cities across North America to have a rule similar to this. Its basic common courtesy to not park work vans in residential neighborhoods. **Everyone** knows that. You'd have to be pretty self absorbed to insist on flouting the rules. I guess that's how some towns become known as dumps.

Here's irritating, at least to me. Some people do not belong in single family homes, because they have no interest in maintaining yards. They move in, and then seem surprised that grass A)Grows, and B) Does not mow it's self.

People, do yourselves and your neighbors a favor. Stay in the condo or apartment. It's cool. You're busy, yes, we get it. So are we, and yet, we manage. Please. What losers.

Okay heres my thought. I just bought this house this year. I knew nothing about this stupid code. My husband has a work truck thats why we didnt get in a HOA community. Just found out about this 2mths after we bought our home.My husband parks his van where the previous homeowner parked his boat so for now were okay.I choose this house because it was in our price rank and Winter Springs High for my Daughters Jrotc.
Today I get a thing in the mail about Marking Your Parking. NOw we have to put something down where my husband parks his van. Okay fine. We will do it and a year from now when my daughter graduates, I will sell my home for what I paid for it. As long as we break even.So we will see how property values jump then. I wouldnt have bought this house if I knew this.

Now I know why the police came into my neighborhood asking questions about my truck while I was away.
I have no ladder racks, signs, or work related material in view.
Moved to Casselberry 6 weeks ago and already regret it...

Casselberry has a lot to offer. Check out & see a great location, natural beauty, & homes in all price ranges. It was voted one of the top 3 Sustainable Small Cities in the US for 2010 by Seimans. More trees are going up on our interior roads every year. The jazz concerts bring people in from other cities. More than half of our businesses are home-based, but not everyone has a truck. No city is perfect, & commissioners aren't always right. Casselberry is not a cookie cutter community, and I wouldn't want it to be.
