Casselberry rule about parking trucks sparks blue-collar revolt

There are 72 comments on the Orlando Sentinel story from Jun 24, 2009, titled Casselberry rule about parking trucks sparks blue-collar revolt. In it, Orlando Sentinel reports that:

A seemingly obscure rule about where to park trucks has sparked a fundamental debate about the identity of this blue-collar suburb: Should Casselberry try to look more like Heathrow? City commissioners say they just wanted to clean up neighborhoods a bit when they required that owners of vans or trucks that have racks for pipes and ladders park ...

Giving people grief about work trucks during the most desperate financial decline in US history since 1929 is almost the stupidest thing I've heard out of Casselberry. Would you buffoons prefer blocks on end of foreclosures?

And speaking of Heathrow, apparently things are not quite as rosy as believed. I don't recall hearing about a Casselberry family being slaughtered by the father in residence due largely to financial stress. Is that the objective of the city commissioners?

What a joke. Code enforcement is a waste of time and money. When I lived in Casselberry back in the early '90's my neighbor was operating a automobile Paint and Body business in his back yard. No permits, No license, dumping waste in the ground and Code Enforcement did NOTHING !! He's still there today. The neighborhood is a eyesore, the old neighbors like myself moved out and now it's all rentals.

If I park my Chevy Avalanche with my bike and kayak racks on the roof and that's OK, it looks like a double standard to crack down on the painter with his ladder rack.

The Courts have stricken both Coral Springs and Coral Gables ordinances as interfering with the owner's Constitutionally guaranteed right to travel.

Go rednecks!

It is pretty easy to distinguish a dump trucks, semi and the like from a pickup truck with work items and write an ordinance covering that. Many of these individuals bought their homes and started their businesses prior to the ordinance. Heard of a grandfather clause? I've seen some run down houses, unmown lawns and the like in Casselberry. Go police those individuals and leave the hard working people alone. The city should be happy they have jobs to pay their taxes.

Casselberry is like your homely sister. Sometimes you've gotta admit that you're just a little homely and accept it. Casselberry is no Winter Park or Maitland. It's an older community with older 50s style homes and people who work for a living....unlike the city council types.
What kind of idiots would slap a new oridinance on working class folks during the middle of a recession? I'm guessing that a lot of these guys are finding it hard to keep afloat and the cost of altering or rebuilding a garage to fit a van or truck would sink them.(The city probably has an ordinance against garages that are large enough to house a truck).
Leave these guys alone. Amend the ordinance to require parking in the driveway, start enforcing lawn and home maintenance and stop trying to be the city that you will never be.
If the council morons and whiners want pristine homes with HOA rules, let them move to newer development...or to Wnter Park.

You've given me an idea. Work racks and ladder that are disguised as Kayaks. Or, paint the ladders and racks a bright color and put a Yakima label on them.

Many small business people work from their homes, and paying rental on a garage or building one could cut into the profits that they use to feed their families. Why would you want to mess with honest working people. You should be supporting them. If you want to pick on someone, go after the folks sitting on their porches all day long.

This is so absurd! These people are working hard to be able to pay their taxes and they get grief? Of course enforcing certain guidelines is important, but once someone drives on their PRIVATE property with a work vehicle the city should have nothing to say about it!

MAybe the city would like to build, maintain and provide security for public "work vehicle garages" and run a shuttle back and forth. I think not.
One thing I have learned is that you can't offer a problem without offering a solution. The council seems to just offer the problem and tell you to go screw yourself figuring out a solution!

The city should hide their vehicles as well...after all, they are very close to the neighborhood.

My community has a similar ordinance.
As a result, many of the business owners moved out. It's too bad....it was free advertising for the businesses. If I needed a locksmith or AC guy in an emergency(which I did) I could just look around the corner. I would rather give the business to my neighbors and help keep them in business.

If they are keeping up on the house payments and not abandoning the property, the city should back off.
Leave them alone and worry more about real crimes like murder and rape.

Hel-LO, Casselberry government! People who can't afford to live in Heathrow or Winter Park have to live *somewhere*. If you snobbishly push for only rich people to live in Casselberry, you're going to end up with a lot of empty houses.

To those city officials who ran (and won) on a platform of "code enforcement": I voted against you, and the people who voted for you belong in Winter Park or Heathrow, not Casselberry.
