this is soooo sad, I feel so bad for the boy who never had a chance-poor guy-he was only 20 and had so much potential, I still cant believe this happend, it is very shocking that a mother would do this to her own child-sounds like she was jealous of him or something-maybe because he was young and carefree like most 20 year olds are-poor kid-bless his soul

Shame on the gun range for not checking this woman out before they let her rent a gun. I find the range at fault for this murder. She had an attempted suicide on her record and was mentally unstable. Why didn't they find that?? R.I.P Mitchell!

You say the gun range is at fault because they didn't check her background before renting the gun to her is like saying all Alcohol stores and bars should run background checks to see if the people they are selling to have a historry of alcohol problems that may lead to a car crash with fatalities. You need to wake up.

Are you an IDIOT?

There's no "central mental health record repository" that they could check. How do you expect them to find that out.

And don't even suggest we make one. I am NOT making any of my medical records available to anybody outside of my doctor.

Although I agree guns should not be rented, just where would one check for mental unstability? Not like it would be in public records or anywhere you can find it. It's PRIVATE information.

Lot of people shot in church lately, shouldn't we do background checks on people going into church each Sunday?

And how do you purpose they do that? Consider that medical records are protected under state and federal law? The gun range wouldn't have access to that information.

Think before you type or speak...knee jerk reaction no brainer.

You really expect that a range could check every person who rents a gun before letting them in? There is no way they would be able to operate, not to mention it costs $5 just to check someone's background and takes around 20 min. How could they run the business if they had to spend 20 + mins checking every person who came in.

I am not saying it is ok for someone to get their hands on a gun that easily, but it is not the range's fault. There should be some kind of legislation in place requiring people who want to shoot a gun to pre-register and have their background checked, like a drivers license.

WHAT?? The gun range is at fault? That's ridiculous! Her mental health status is not a standard background check. It's closed due to HIPPA laws. Your medical background is not available for all to see!!

This is such a sad story. It is bad enough when someone takes their own life but when they murder someone else it is unforgivable and so senseless.
